Krueng Pasee is one of the longest rivers in Aceh, stretching from Bener Meriah Regency (upstream) to the coast of Samudera Subdistrict, North Aceh District.
The river that empties into the Malacca Strait, in addition to having a very long record (hundreds of kilometers) also has a very extreme currents.
Floods can come suddenly without time. For example in the downstream area (North Aceh) in sunny weather conditions, but floods still occur. Because, in the upper region that is in Bener Meriah regency is known to have very high rainfall is hit by rain.
Between Fact or Myth
for local residents ie Mbang community, Geureudong Pase Subdistrict, North Aceh Regency is very familiar with natural phenomena in the region. Because nature is always always give a sign, though sometimes only certain humans and animals that are able to understand it.
before the headwaters of Krueng Pasee sending floods to the estuary, the gatekeeper narrated as a gigantic dragon asks first the ruler of the estuary, whether he is ready to accommodate the billions of gallons of the flood or not. If ready to be accommodated, it will be sent and vice versa.
Because it is also common, when rain intensity is very high upstream, but Krueng Pasee is not flooded either. That's because of Lageuem being heard, the inefficiency of the estuary authorities to receive water spills.
When observed carefully, there is indeed a difference in the rhythm of the mutual Lageuem-reply is, either when the mouth of the mouth is ready to receive the flood or when not. And Lageuem it has become a handle (a kind of password) for the original Mbang community from generation to generation until the 90s, although the current generation has many who no longer understand and remember it.
The story of a pair of dragons that controlled Krueng Pasee is not just a figment. Finally in 2008, when several sub-districts that became Krueng Pasee trajectory were hit by severe floods, some Geureudong Pase Subdistrict who was fishing accidentally saw a pair of eyeballs burning inside Krueng Pase Watershed, from upstream to downstream moving down with the flow flood.
The incident became a widespread conversation among the people there who are believed to be a male dragon upstream Krueng Pasee who want to find the females at the estuary to mate, as the ancients said first.
The local population's consistency in holding and trusting the Lageuem flood of Krueng Pasee is exactly like the beliefs of the Simeulu Islands community towards the Smong phenomenon that is now better known as the Tsunami by the people of Aceh and the world at large.
Belief that is one of the causes-side because of the power of Allah SWT of course- so that the people in these two areas are many of the natural phenomenon terselematkan in their respective regions.
Abstinence and Prohibition
Nevertheless, there are some things that must be understood, guarded and avoided when about to intersect with Krueng Pase which is also still held by the local community until now, including:
- Should not be happy in Krueng Pasee.
- Should not takabbur and consider yourself the most powerful and understand the situation in
there. - Should not be greedy in taking the results of the river, the fish in general.
- Krueng Pasee is also believed to always ask victims every year.
- When it is cloudy or hear the sound of thunder, let alone accompanied by rain in the direction
west, then hurry away from the river area, unless it is understood correctly
with Lageuem earlier. - And there are many other things that are considered taboo and become a trust
local people.
