ENG Welcome everyone to the first "organ of the week" post! You can find full information about participation in this contest here: BASE: Body, Art, Science, Emotion. We anticipated a bit the first post to give some more time for users to understand how this works!

ENG "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart" - Helen Keller

ENG As you can see from the image beside, the organ of the week will be...the heart!

ITA Come potete vedere dall'immagine accanto, l'organo della settimana sarà...il cuore!

The organ of the week: the heart!
L'organo della settimana: il cuore!

ENG For science professionals, the heart is the organ that pumps blood into our body; for the artists it represents the passion, for the storytellers, just love.

The heart is a hollow muscular organ that contracts rhythmically from birth to death. It has the role of "engine" the circulatory system, pumping blood from the center of our body to the periphery, carrying nutrients, immune cells, proteins and other substances throughout the body. The muscular tissue of the heart is called myocardium and It is more represented in the left hearth, at the level of the ventricle. Being a muscle, the heart itself has a constant need for energy (blood sugar) and oxygen to work: when this does not happen, as in the case of a thrombosis of the coronary arteries, the muscle cells may die leading to an heart attack . The heart is endowed with an independent innervation that allows a constant contraction of the muscle cells. The rhythm is dictated by "special" muscular cells called "pacemaker" cells. The first group of these pacemaker cells is called sinoatrial node: from there, a contraction wave is generated and it propagates to all the muscle cells of the heart.

In ancient times it was said that the Aztecs extracted the beating heart of the sacrificial victims and offered it to the gods to appease their anger; the Greek philosopher Aristotle thought that the heart was the seat of memory, even now people use the expression "by heart" to mean something to remember.

Now it's time for you to write about the heart! Will you take a scientific approach or be more passionate?

Need help? Bisogno d'aiuto?

ENG Need some inputs? Heart is usually related to love, affection and feelings, what about some cool story to share? Heart is also an organ: are there any new findings about cardiology? While drawings and crafts can represent love, maybe you could have seen some hearts around...game cards? Who said that? Moreover it seems that the heart role and love feelings could have been different in the past...and what about the future?

Good work everyone! All the entries will be fine until sunday 23th 8.00 AM CET. Winners will be announced every week on Monday-Tuesday.

Buon lavoro a tutti!

In the heart drawing above in the post, there are at least five anatomical references. First one to get all the five references, will win immediately a bonus STEEM! Just type in the comment below your answer! Everyone one can participate!

right atrium, aorta, left ventricle, left atrium, superior vena cava / inferior vena cava, pulmonary artery, pericardium

1 on 5!

capillary network (strings of the guitar), thrombocytes (notes which are on the stave), leukocytes, erythrocytes, pericardium

3 on 5:) and you are really close to another one

thrombus (the stave (polymerized fibrin) + platelets (notes which are on the stave)),
veins with valves (vessel-like end for the guitar),
leukocytes, erythrocytes, pericardium

sinoatrial (SA) node (yellow oval near the left eye),
thrombus (the stave (polymerized fibrin) + platelets (notes which are on the stave)),
leukocytes, erythrocytes, pericardium,
veins with valves (vessel-like end of the guitar).

This is what I see. Is this what artist represented?

0 on 5! I will give a tip. For aesthetic purpose there is no big vessel involved in the contest. There are 4 small details while one is pretty big :)
