One thing a company can do during bad times is to instead of firing half of the crew, they can lower everybody's wage by 50%, (also the CEO and such), until the bad times have past...

I was involved with a company that did so during the dot.com bubble and there was some whining and moaning, but the bad times past and they became super successful and the salaries went back to normal and the company grew tremendously.
