As humanity moves forward and as technology advances further and further, we will begin to have discussions about stuff that we have never even imagined before and stuff that we only thought was possible in movies.
We already know that technology is making the world smaller by bringing us all closer together and several hundred years down the road, we might even begin questioning the concept of nations as we begin to venture out in space where we will have to act as one.
I had written about it about a month ago in this post. If we do not lose the concept of countries however, we will begin to see something happen, that up until now we have only seen in sci-fi movies.
What I am talking about is space-based nations. That even sounds futuristic, doesn’t it? So, what are these space nations and how can something like that even be possible?
What’s A Space Nation?
A space nation is an independent nation that is based in space. If you are imagining a country that is not based on a planet or a geographical location within it, and exists as a fleet of spaceships wandering around Earth, you are right.
It has its own law, its own citizenship, national anthem, flag and anything you would imagine that comprises a nation. The only difference? It exists in space. Ideally such a nation would be self sufficient and would not interfere or get interfered by other nations of the Earth.
You must be thinking that it is a really crazy idea and something we can’t even dream of right now and you would be correct. But did the people in the 17th century dream of the internet and the smartphone? Most probably not. The same way, right now we cannot see how this will be possible but technology, my friend, has a habit of making the impossible, possible.
Various technologies like energy generation tech, advanced agricultural tech and all sorts of other things will have to come together for this to work but I think that this will be a possibility within a 1000 years.
In fact, the first seeds of such a space-based nation are already beginning to get sowed. No, I am not kidding. Some really bright people are coming together to kickstart what could truly be the next frontier in the human advancement.
Asgardia - The First Space-based Nation
Before you get your hopes up, (like I did), let me tell you that, Asgardia is not already a fully functional space colony that you can join today and escape all your earthly woes, literally and figuratively.
Asgardia is an initiative by an international group of scientists, started late last year as a private space-based nation. They chose the name “Asgardia” as it means “cities in skies” in Norse mythology.
They started recruiting people last year and till now, over 190,000 people across the world have already joined. They are also providing citizenships to interested people on their websites. You can check their website here which contains their entire plan and other interesting stuff.
Right now they are going ahead with the launch of a data satellite that will store data off planet. The purpose and the nature of this data are confidential. Also, in the future, they will be launching their own currency and calendar.
In the future, Asgardia will be a true space based nation which would most probably orbit the Earth. People will live and work in space their whole lives, will even get married and have babies, and do any thing that we do here on Earth.
This is way, way into the future. You and I will be long gone, but future generations, hundreds of years from now could see it happening and the interesting part is that the process that leads to it might have already started.
Would You Live In One?
I know this won’t happen in our lifetimes, but if it were an option, would you register to leave your country and planet, and live in space, adopting entirely new identities?
I asked myself the same question and a part of me wanted to leave at once. I am really sick and tired of all that is going on, on our planet and it would be really nice to get away from all that and start fresh in a well organised space nation. Plus it would be really, really cool.
But then on second thought, such a life would be very monotonous. Yes, for the first few days, the view outside the window would be really great but the same view would make you reminisce all the natural beauty that the Earth has to offer and it’s just not the natural state of being.
So, I don’t think that I would want to join one even if it were an option today. Maybe future generations and future society will evolve a different way of thinking where people would want to do it, in which case, I would have no objection, because you know, I would have been long dead!
Anyways, what would you do? Would you like to live in space your entire lives?
I wouldn't mind living in Space. Yes, I'd miss our dear and beautiful planet Earth but Asgardia looks like a wonderful project and people from the future will surely be living what's science fiction nowadays. Imagine space travels, all the new explorations, space archaeology, biology, various space technologies, new planets and places that we can set our foot on. Space living is definite future, maybe in 500 to 1000 years it will be a common thing. Thank you for sharing this post, will be reading about Asgardia. I love the name too, I'm into Norse mythology. @sauravrungta
I agree with what you say here. Space is definitely the bigger play for humanity in the future. That's our nature. Curiosity. And space has a lot of things that we don't know about and hence the exploration. Thanks for the wonderful comment :)
I think it's important that we do to get further in space exploration but I personally wouldn't be up for it. At least in the first generation. It's gonna suck.
I need my space and funnily enough in space you won't have any space. Little tight up there - especially the first few generations.
Starting up a colony on a different planet such as Mars might be a different story (although much of the problems are the same but 1/3 G sounds pretty cool :D )
Yeah, that's absolutely right. The first few generations will be a lot of compromises and with all other things will improve from there on and then it would be worthwhile.
" in space you won't have any space" This cracked me up! LOL
Agreed, the planet could use a good breather. Though this is our home, we've done a great job of hurting Mother Earth for the longest. Living in space is a pretty cool idea, and I know people like Elon Musk who are actually trying to make this happen within the next decade or 2. Fingers crossed; space travel just may be the new norm ^_^ thanks for sharing!
Yeah, humanity is really looking at space and space exploration in general with renewed interest and I think it is important to do that. Human expansion to space and other planets would be a natural course of advancement and also it is important as it would ensure our survival.
Agreed. Couldn't have said it better myself!
I probably wouldn't want to live in space but I would love to go on vacation there. In fact most people might even get to see this happen in their lifetime due to life extension technologies. I actually wrote about it here:
https://steemit.com/sciencefiction/@digitalcosmos555/futurtopia-2-living-forever
Yes, space tourism will start happening within our lifetimes and we could be lucky enough to experience it.
The highly-acclaimed series Battlestar Galactica gives you a great look at how this might work out (under an admittedly catastrophic, sci-fi premise). You even get a thorough look at political structure, mob mentality, elections and governance.
I highly recommend it (The modern one!).
I don't think I want to live it myself, at least, not as an early-adopter!
Nice! I will surely check it out then :)
Definitely would. I actually already signed up as a citizen for Asgardia lol. Got my citizen ID number last week. For me, I believe that the future is only as far off as we're willing to work. There may be a chance for us to travel to space commercially in the near future, especially with the trajectory of technology and the combined work ethic of genius people every where. It's something I'm looking forward to, definitely.
only if theres hot women
Green space women
haha, the one in guardians of the galaxy is pretty hot!
LOL!!
I like your post
Thank you :)
Would not like it, like your post
I agree and thank you :)
Simple answer for me, no.
I'm not saying I wouldn't want to go to space but this planet is our own, we have destroyed it, and now we must change it for the better
That is what I would like to do too. But yes, I would go to Mars to at least spend some time if that were an option.
i agree :) and I couldn't handle living without natural places. I need trees and stuff around me!
The question is great, and the thoughts this provokes is intriguing.
Personally, I wouldn't want to live in space my whole life on some platform or floating ship.
If I was able to pilot vessels and travel between planets then that would be a different story but in today's day and age that kind of technology isn't publically available.
~ @Timbo
Yeah, it would really be boring to always be floating around in the same spaceship, wouldn't it? We would need to colonise many planets before we even consider doing that. Only then can we spend our time visiting all these places and having a cool time! :D
Could you imagine zooming around in spaceships from planet to planet. We would have to make ships that were EXTREMELY STABLE, FAST, and of course fireproof haha.
Hey, maybe we could make a space project here on steemit. Call it "STEEM in SPACE" haha.
One day raise billions to start work on it and then draw attention from high level investors and receive trillions to catapult our already succeeding project into steemline production. (Pun intended)
I can already visualise it happening :D The future is just gonna be crazy, isn't it? :D
I believe so
hell no, because they would try to build a perfect society but the perfect society doesn't exist.. eventually corruption or something would happen that would make the space base just as bad as Earth.. plus i seen Alien.. I seen Elysium.. All it takes is 1 breach...
That's a great point. Trying to make a perfect society would actually have the opposite effect. And yes, Elysium does a fine job at letting us know what would happen if ever this option becomes available.
hey, I'm an Asguardian, signed up a few days after the website went up!
now just waiting for the "token drop"! lol (that part was a joke)
You really signed up? Nice! You can make a post about it then! Would be interesting to read! :)
I haven't heard much about it since I signed up though, or maybe that's cuz I've been on steemit too much these days to notice! lol
But I will keep an eye out and post as I learn more.
Nice, would love to get first hand information. This project is really cool.
Thanks for this article. It's very interesting. I'm sure I'll have fun watching the development.
Dr. Igor Ashurbeyli looks like a super friendly face. :)
Yeah, it will be interesting to watch out for what they do next. Definitely interesting times we live in.
Oh yeah very interesting times. One thought I had while standing the laundry was; Why would living in space be better? I mean If we fucked it on earth, what will change in space? The second this gas who is funding this? :)
And this thought came to me just now... Will we have to stand laundry in space???
Living entirely within an orbiting space station forever ? No way. A colony on another planet with lots of stuff to see and do ? Yes.
Agreed and agreed. In fact, I would choose a life where I live for some months on Earth, some weeks on the spaceship and then some months on Mars or other colonised planet. The life of a cosmic vagabond sounds incredible to me :D
Definitely not. I believe that we should simply start looking after earth better then no one would have to flee this planet.
Yes that is true. But in my opinion, we should also start looking at space and other planets for possible future homes. We can definitely do both.
I live in the most beautiful place on the earth. If I had a choice to live in space or to die on earth...I would die here. We should send all the criminals to live in space..lol!
LOL Now THAT would be an option!! haha
Sure, and you want a brain like mine with such good ideas to go live in space... I think NOT! LOL
LOL
It would be an amazing adventure to live in an entirely independent nation, though I would have to get used to looking at my home planet through a window.
yeah, that last part would be sad after a while, I guess.
I guess that it would be very sad, but as Denis Waitley, an American motivational speaker said: "You---- must look beyond for Perspective", and you can't look any further beyond from anything than from looking at the world from space.
That's such a nice saying. Love it!
Thanks
If I look at sci-fi movies, I would love to live in space, in reality, I think mother earth is fine.
Totally agree with you on both points :)
Yes, I feel the same! However, I'd miss nature too much. It's like you said, the first few days would be super cool and there'd be an awesome view. After that though... there's not much change of scenery.
Now if it were a new, earth-like planet... that would be a tougher choice! What an adventure that would be!
Yeah, a new planet would be an entirely different scenario. Much more to do, much more to look forward to. Simply awesome!
What you actually mean is: Would you be willing to drink distilled piss for the same of the space meme?
haha, I guess yeah, that's what I really mean!
Sounds like fun!
Yup, it would be. Not sure for how long though. hehe
Already it's not the question "Do you want or not?"!http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/science/ct-stephen-hawking-escape-earth-20170505-story.html
Yeah, I had even written a post about this recently too. We absolutely need to look to space and other planets to expand our presence in the cosmos and to ensure our survival.
fantastic, nice post @sauravrungta
Thank you :)
Im fine where Im at. I do think the MOST important thing to Humanity is traveling the Stars.
Great post. Very details. You spent time on this.
@watchout2017
Domi
Thank you. I agree that our ultimate goal would be to expand into the cosmos.
Do you think we come from the Stars?
@watchout2017
Domi
uovote
1,000 years! that's crazy far into the future, it's more like that we will have spaced based civilizations much sooner then that.
people will be living in space before we have a permanent settlement on Mars.
Yeah, nobody can tell when these things will happen. It was just an estimate on my part. But yeah, lots of human presence in space from here on.
If I could be trained to be a jedi, I will live in there :)
hahaha. Yeah, I think they would want some Jedi on the spaceship!
There are serious health implications caused by extended periods in space. Muscle, bones and tissue decrease their mass and capability dramatically in just one year. Sex is possible, but a healthy newborn is highly unlikely, since zero gravity is completely unnatural for humans. Then there's a problem of vitamins, minerals, fresh food, etc. which are essential for a log healthy lifestyle. I'm just scratching the surface here.
P.S. No, I'm not fun at parties.
Yes, all those are valid concerns today. The key word being today. In the next hundreds of years who knows what kind of technologies we will develop that will solve all these issues.
Interesting. I wonder if it's not healthy for humans because we've never lived there or because we require a constant state of equilibrium to survive in?
Yup, I would definitely do it. When do we leave?
Haha! I think you should contact the people directly ;)
It could be one big adventure, not sure if I would like it permanently though?
Yep, I would go for part time space duty, thank you very much! LOL
Sounds like a great idea living in space, but I hate to be the bearer of bad news humans have never being into space, no man has ever being to the moon and it isn't going to happen any thing soon. Listen to this NASA engineer talking about the issue with the Van Allen Belt (@ the 3.33 min mark)
So if NASA could pass through this area in 1969 why are they now having issues?as long as the piece of shit central bankers arnt involved thats a fine idea.........sooner we get rid of them scum the better....for all humanity.......and space going civilisations....
But I think they will somehow find their way into every space-based projects.
Not if there are people involved. Flawed humanity, wrecking up planet earth, taking it to outer space. The more we spread, the more we doom. What type of people fund all these projects - the same ones that want to take over the world.
Sorry, wish mankind would do better. Then it would be great.
But you can't do it alone right. There will always be people involved.
Yes it is very ironic, that we need people, yet they are the problem.
Yes,I totaly that would. The benefits would be endless. First of all waking up in the morning, knowing that you're in Space is fantastic.
Second of all it would skyrocket science research absolutely and bring us even further than we could possibly think of,.
The biggest question is whether we bring artificial intelligence with us up there and asteroid impacts would be a big danger aswell.
Its overall a human idea, captured in your brain, waiting to be free.
The question is whether generator work they way they do now in space aswell.
AI will be a given. If humanity develops the ability to stay in space indefinitely, AI will be so advanced that it would be beyond our imagination.
And yes, I agree that it would set humanity up for the next phase of research and development.
As long as there is good food, I'd do it!
haha, good food should be a priority!! :D
interesting notion but still a lot of technical issues to overcome. had we continued with the promise that the apollo missions to the moon began, many of our question would be resolved already - as it is we've lost 40 years of advancement and discovery. luckily now we have substantial resources to bring to bear - advanced computer technology and programming, new material, etc. will make the transition to a species no longer reliant on their homeworld for their future existence
