Determinado pela Assembleia das Nações Unidas, definiram a data do dia 11 de fevereiro para comemorar o dia Internacional de Mulheres e Meninas na Ciência. Algumas contribuições que marcam a presença feminina no meio científico sao:
Marie Sklodowska Curie, foi a primeira mulher a receber o Prêmio Nobel nas áreas de Física (1903) e Química (1911) e primeira cientista a receber a dupla premiação.
Rosalind Franklin, pesquisadora da área de biofísica cujos estudos sobre a difração do raio-X contribuíram para a visualizar a estrutura do DNA.
