I had a think about this and remember snapping a few files years back and the metal being very brittle, this could of caused the crack, try it with a better metal like an old car part and it wont crack i would say, still love the workmanship and result.
I've snapped a couple to over the years, the sacrifice that's made for hardness unfortunately. Yeah, I think this crack is historic and just missed by me due to file being dark and rusty to start with. Old leaf springs are suppose to be a good source I believe.

I'll be hitting the woods soon and testing it out for batoning, feather-sticks and might even flint n steel it down the spine for the fire. (I'll sand the spine after to remove the strike wear).

I think it will hold up for most jobs and it looks pro : ) first attempt and way better than many people could craft <3
