THE CROCODILE

The crocodile is the river king,
Much fear he can bring.
Prowling the river day and night
Keeping mostly out of sight.
He hides himself among the reeds,
Mostly at night is when he feeds.

His powerful jaws he clamps down,
Their prey they roll until they drown,
Eating some they keep the rest,
Until a time that they think best.
They tear their food,
It’s never chewed.
Or if it’s small
He swallows all.
Stones are swallowed to help digest,
Their food once they do go to rest.
Crocodile tears do really flow,
When they eat their food you know.
Not because they really care,
But have swallowed too much air.
He bites down hard but you can hold
His mouth closed if you are so bold.
The muscles used to open his jaw
Are rather weak that is for sure.

A mother croc her nest will lay
Then three months, she near, will stay.
They lay their eggs, at least thirty
Some as many up to eighty.
When time to hatch they make a noise,
A mother acts and skills employs.
She digs her babies from the sand,
And takes them from the land.
Using her mouth she carries them,
Like a very precious gem,
Safely to the water free,
It’s here they grow if they’re lucky.

The crocs webbed feet help him to turn
As the water he does churn.
His tail gives him swimming power,
Up to fifteen kilometres per hour.
He is slower when on land,
But still be careful where you stand.
Along the land they can creep,
But from the water also leap.

He lies along the river banks,
Looking like his playing pranks.
Mouth wide open sitting still,
He does this for himself to chill.
He has no sweat glands so they keep
Their mouths wide open when they sleep.

Their body’s up to eighteen feet,
With a rather heavy seat,
They can weigh up to a ton,
Yet they, after you, can run.
They can live for seventy years,
Sometimes longer as one hears.

So when upon this reptile you chance,
Beware of how toward it you advance.
It’s best not to stay too close to the water,
Make your visit in croc prone areas shorter.

This is a fine poem. The diction is simple enough together with the rhyme pattern which fits into a perfect musicality.

The narrator in the poem is awed by the towering characteristics of a crocodile. The narrator ends his beautiful poem by advising his audience to beware of crocodiles.

PS: This is a masterpiece. You are being followed

Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed the poem and the message I was conveying. Crocodiles are amazing but need to be shown the proper respect.

What a wonderful poetic description of the crocodile!
I was lucky enough to visit a crocodile conservation park a week ago.
It was a fabulous moment!

Thank you. I'm glad you liked my poem. Crocodiles are wonderful animals. A conservation park for crocodiles sounds like a great place to visit.

They are awesome, and a little creepy. You should seriously think about putting a book together with all your poems. They are so educational and clever.

Thank you. I'm glad you like the poems.

This is my favourite of all your poems, its fantastic.

Thank you. Crocodiles are very interesting creatures. It was fun to make a poem about facts on the crocodile.

muy interesante post, conocía poco sobre los cocodrilos, gracias

De nada. Me alegra que hayas disfrutado el poema.

Wow, fascinating pictures! and I actually learned something about crocodiles! :) so thank you for taking the time, and writing this poem! Best wishes!

Thanks. I am glad I can help share information on crocodiles. They are very interesting creatures.

Beautiful, definitely worth a resteem

Thank you. Glad for you to resteem.

The pleasure is mine

This piece of yours made me consider rearing a croc myself....just kidding😄
You are being followed 🙋‍♀️The beauty of literature is that it makes us fall in love even with the most hated and cornered things...@sourcherry

Crocodiles have always been respected and feared animals, in ancient Egypt they were considered gods

That's right. You can see them in Egyptian artworks and paintings.

Wow animals photo shot is really really awesome like your poem...

"Their body’s up to eighteen feet,"
really a good think.

This ferocious looking creature!

Yes - they look very mean. I wouldn't get too close.

Amazing. I loved the poem and the photos are magnificent. Each part of the poem went according to the image.

Thanks. I'm glad you liked the poem and the images I chose to match with it.

oh, one learns new things every day, I did not know that they swam up to 15 kilometers per hour, just at the moment of being in the water, really we are in the stomach of the creature. x.x

That's right. I don't think one could get away in time. I'm glad you enjoyed the poem.

what a very nice poem :)

Thanks. Glad you liked it.

Waow, Beautiful photos😍😍 and a lovely poem😍❤
I used to hate crocodiles buh because of this poem, now, i love them😍😍

Thank you. Crocodiles are wonderful creatures - maybe a little misunderstood. I am glad that now you can change your mind and love them.

Oh, what fear did you give me at the beginning, were the photographs taken by you? Although it is very scary and I would never approach it, I have to accept that it is an animal beauty, especially those eyes that have

Thank you. I did not take the photographs but thought they went very well with my description of the crocodile in the poem. They are very beautiful animals - their eyes are amazing but one should respect it and be very careful around them.

And all the authors of the photos survived? ))

One more wonderful poem, @sourcherry! I did enjoy when reading. Perfect mood about crocs! I'd just wish to argue a little bit about such words:

The crocodile is the river king,
Much fear he can bring.
Prowling the river day and night
Keeping mostly out of sight.

Crocs have also to be careful about big predators. Once I've faced some dead croc in Zambia, Luangwa river bed. You may have a look... Seems some lion might kill it, or may be even hippo... You may see he resulted in not having a half of upper jaw.
Luangva-467s.jpg

Thank you for your comments. That's terrible for the crocodile. In Australia we don't really have those sorts of larger predators here so the crocodile is higher up in the food chain and more dominant in the rivers.
Of course they also have a very low survival rate - as babies 99 percent do not make it due to predators at this stage of life.

I've never seen a crocodile live.

Initially I thought it as a kid's rhyme only! But as I started to read more I started to realize its theme. Its an awesome poem which reveals all necessary information regarding crocodile. And Its pictures? Very relevant and lively! Thanks @sourcheryy.

Thank you. I do try to research facts on the crocodile to make it enjoyable for young and old. Glad you liked it.

Thanks for reply. Enjoying your writings. Carry on.

I saw some large crocs in Costa Rica. We stopped by the side of a bridge, and down by the riverside, the beasts were sunning themselves. They are rare and impressive creatures. Definitely not to be trifled with, but we can appreciate them at a distance and in poetry.

Great poem! I love the images you included to accompany each point you discussed!

Thank you.

Totally awesome!
