This 'Not from Today' but it is from the I16th of July
2010 - So this is an interesting shot, and is the reason I choose this day in the archive, as you'll see later. in 2010 this was just something that I thought was cool, a cool little street - July 16th was a Friday this year, was this taken early in the morning, more more likely late at night - that will become important later. It's Centre Place in Melbourne, people often mistake it for Degraves lane, but with it's famous laneway cafes which set the scene for the rest of Melbourne, but this is Centreplace.
2015 okay so this is where this project gets a little freaky - Exactly five years later and we are in the same laneway, the creperie is now on the left and we are looking right. This laneway means something to me now. You see at some point between 2010 and 2015 (maybe 2011 of 2012) I has started eating because every Friday morning in Cafe Vicolino with some of my cousins, July 16th 2015 was not a Friday, it was a Thursday, but I was so used to coming here now that I used it as a cut-through. This shot I think is night as everything is closed.
So this is kind of what this project is about, how the meanings of place change over time, how something that was nothing to you become familiar, and how something familiar can come to mean nothing. The owners sold Vicolino just before COVID and then we stopped coming due to COVID, but I still think of Maria and those cousin breakfasts on the odd occasions that I cut through here.
2016 - This is fimiliar - it is somewhere in North Melbourne, I'm sure I've walked past it a thousand times, but for the life of my I can't place it right now.
2017 - I don't travel much in July is what I've learn, but I can tell you this isn't from Melbourne, this shot is from Adelaide - I was there to see a game of football with my brother and dad, there is every chance I left them in the hotel and went for a bit of a walk to get this shot.
And that my friends was my life on the 17th of July but not from today
