Up again for featuring Philippine Blockbuster Movies :)
Helmed by the award-winning box office director Bb. Joyce Bernal, Last Night was the reunion project of Piolo Pascual and Toni Gonzaga (the successful tandem which made Starting Over Again a remarkable film). What's more surprising is that the script was written by Bela Padilla, a famous actress in the Philippines who has an incredible talent for writing.
The film has a deep and dark plot. It revolves around Mark who's life was falling apart. He felt so alone and terribly sad until he finally succumbed to depression. He decided to end his misery through suicide. Just as he was about to end his life, he met Carmina— a suicidal girl who offered to be his "suicide partner." The woman was too funny and talkative for a suicidal person but he was able to endure and eventually got used to her presence. While plotting their own death, they were able to form a friendship until they fell in love with each other.
Love was actually strong enough to make a person want to live. But their story was more complicated than what you think. An unexpected twist will change their lives and will leave viewers on the edge of their seats.
The movie's theme was very timely. Suicide is an alarming issue worldwide. People needs to be more educated in terms of depression and how to deal with it or how to help depressed people who needs someone to save them from darkness. Furthemore, the movie was well-made up to the tiniest details. The settings were well-picked. Manila has been known for pollution, traffic and crime but the film was able to showcase the classical beauty of Old Manila. The cinematography was also impressive as well as the pacing and foreshadowing of events. The soundtracks will also give you the "feels" and will really squeeze your heart.
Last Night is dark, haunting, hair-raising and romantic. Yes, it's weird how you can combine those descritions in one movie. That's how unique this film is. So, if you're ready to get your mind blown, please do watch Last Night as soon as you can.
