The funny thing is, often it is the cheapo stuff that is worth the most money now. My wife works with toy companies a lot and they give her stuff she works on.
We have noticed that the collectible items don't appreciate in value like the cheaper stuff. Our theory is that people keep the collectibles nice, while trashing the cheap stuff. In this way there is a high supply of old high quality collectibles but way fewer brand new condition low quality items.
She has Barbie dolls that were $5 new and now worth hundreds, while the Christmas collectibles that originally cost $40 still goes for around $50 on ebay.
