NOT your usual Cranberries post – A Tribute to Dolores

I live as I choose or I will not live at all
-- Dolores O Riordan

Zombie, Linger, Dreams, Ode to My Family – these are just a few songs that people will quickly answer when asked what is their favourite or famous Cranberries song.

A lot of people (mostly those that grew up during the 80s and 90s) surely have heard of the band “The Cranberries”. People will give different responses in describing The Cranberries, but personally, I enjoyed listening to this alternative rock band because of Dolores – the band’s lead vocalist.

Speaking of Dolores, I have been out of the site for quite some time and don’t know if other members have already submitted a post about her passing. Anyway, as an avid fan, I am compelled to submit this post as a tribute of sort.

However, this is not one of those usual posts wherein it details her biography or death details. Instead, I intend this post to show some facts about Dolores that are not usually known.

So without further ado...

Another Big Hit From … Just Like U2

Living in the Philippines at a time where internet is not yet widely available and MTV is the only source of music information, I thought that any foreign artists came to the US. But as it turns out, The Cranberries is an Irish band that hailed from Limerick (this kinda explains that certain accent I can’t quite point out at the time).

When the song Zombie was first played in local radio stations, the song and the band became an instant hit in the Philippines. People became fans and pretty soon, a lot of other songs have been hitting the airwaves – with Linger and Dreams quickly becoming a fan favourite.

Back in the day, the locals didn’t mind where the band came from (we all, well maybe majority) thought that they are from the US.

Interestingly, the Cranberries are in fact from Ireland – a homeland they share with U2

Dolores is not a Psychic

When the band released the song Zombie in the 90s there is no way they would have known that the Zombie-genre would be a smash hit presently. Thanks to shows like The Walking Dead and films like Zombieland, the zombie genre / craze has enjoyed significant success

However, when Dolores solely penned the song, she seemingly has a deeper meaning put into it.

Some say that it is a political statement which is quite a dangerous thing during those days – or in memory of two young boys that died due to a bomb explosion caused by the IRA (Irish Republican Army – a militant group). Aside from killing the two boys (aged 3 and 12), the bomb also injured numerous innocent shoppers.

If one is to read the lyrics of the song, he/she can relate to the true subject matter and intention of the song.

One of Ireland’s Richest

At the height of the band’s popularity, Dolores is listed as one of Ireland’s richest woman. Some say, that she and her family lived at 150 acre farm. If you don’t know or have no idea how huge that is, try imagining 16 tennis courts in a 4x4 formation.

If Dolores is all that, how come she is not in the limelight for a long time until her passing?

This is a very good question. Just like any other popular bands, The Cranberries started strong but is also quickly running out of material that entices their legions of fans. This is the reason why by 2003, the band took a break.

After years of hiatus, band was together again in 2009 for a Reunion tour and a new album. Although not as popular as before, The Cranberries has been a band for 28 years. That is a feat in itself.

Thank you Cranberries and a massive thanks Dolores for all the awesome songs you brought in the world. You will always be remembered
