Why the Fuck Should I Watch: MIDWAY? (2019)

Why the fuck should you watch “Midway”?
• You were watching “Dunkirk” last week and thought that it should have had more fight scenes with planes.
• You are a history and war enthusiast.
• You like boom-boom and piu-piu.
• You can easily put yourself in other people’s shoes and think why they did what they did.

“Midway” is a war movie that starts with the Pearl Harbor being attacked by Japanese forces and what happens next during World War II. There are many characters, but mainly it follows a fighter pilot Best Dick (Ed Skrein). No, I am not kidding – The man’s name is Best Dick. No giggling, let’s be adults here! The movie doesn’t take long to take off, the action starts quickly and it’s a pretty hectic and wild ride until the end.

I was surprised how massive the war scenes were (budget o n l y 100 million USD). Sometimes these kind of movies give us 1 maybe 2 bigger action scenes, but this one feels like one massive battle from start to the end. There is some dialogue and exposition to give us slight idea of characters’ backgrounds and give us small hints about strategies used, but I’ll be honest: this movie doesn’t hold your hand and feed you information with a spoon, and then ask “Did you understand, sir, maybe I will repeat everything?” War is brutal, hectic, sometimes shit happens out of blue, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don’t. All of that was portrayed very well.

“Midway” shows how important every decision and action of every single soldier is, and also at the same time, how expendable and worthless people can be in wars. Many fought and only some lived to tell the tale. Who will live and who will die in wars? Nobody ever knows. While watching this movie I was constantly asking myself: what would I do? Luckily I don’t have to reach to the answers.

We are given many different characters with different point of views that includes Japanese forces and also their commandors. But in the end, it’s just a massive action movie that is recommended to see on the big screen. The visuals (CGI) are not always on the best ever level but this time I let it slide, because I was entertained.

Why the fuck you shouldn’t watch “Midway”?
• You think that the only character who could be called as Dick should forever be Robin from Batman stories.
• You are looking for a deep love story that usually is shoved in there somewhere in Hollywood movies.
• You didn’t watch it in the cinema and now your only option is to watch it on your laptop.
• You are the “Pearl Harbor” movie die-hard fan and think Why to make another movie about it?
