Week 4 – 3D Max – Modeling a Character.
Take a full body front and side picture of your model (yourself or a classmate). Make sure that the model is posed in the ‘snow angle’ pose with arms out and feet at least shoulder width apart. Make sure the model strikes the same pose so nothing moves between the front and side view pictures. In a perfect work, you can shoot your model simultaneously with 2 cameras. If you don’t have a camera just google it and there are tons of front and side views of character models for 3D modeling.
We will load these pictures into Photoshop and create front and side views that are 1024x1024 pixels square. Turn on your rulers in photoshop to pull out guides to mark the center of your character and the major features like top of the head and bottom of the foot, knees, hip shoulders, chin and eyes. This will be helpful when lining up the front and side views.
Bring In the front and side view Photo shop images as PNG files into 3D max and apply them to square Poly planes. Use these reference planes when modeling. Create a box in the middle of the screen and extrude the top up into the body. Extrude the bottom into the leg.
When your model I finished take a render of it and upload it to share. Follow the video below for more details:
