- استروژن دو اثر بر کارکرد تیروئید در حاملگی دارد:
- غلظت TBG خون را افزایش می‌دهد، که منجر به افزایش سطح T4 و T3 کل می‌شود.
- سیالیلاسیون TBG را افزایش می‌دهد، که موجب کاهش پاک‌سازی کبدی T4 و T3 می‌شود.
- علیرغم این تغییرات، سطح T4 و T3 آزاد در گردش خون بدون تغییر باقی می‌ماند.
- کمتر از ۰٫۱٪ هورمون تیروئید از جفت عبور می‌کند. بر این اساس، آزمون‌های کارکرد تیروئید جنین (گرچه معمولاً نیازی به انجام آنها نیست) قابل اعتماد هستند و وابسته به وضعیت تیروئید مادر نیستند.
- هورمون تیروئید را حتی از هفته‌ی ۱۲ حاملگی می‌توان در خون جنین اندازه‌گیری کرد.
