Hello Steemians,
As mentioned in my introduction post I am a junior at Texas State University double majoring in Communications, and Political Science. This semester I have decided to bring a little diversity to our campus by launching a College Libertarians club, our mission is to bring freedom of thought a voice. I do not want to be tied to a national entity such as Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) or even the Libertarian Party, as I feel like that kind of defeats the purpose of our mission considering they would be pushing their personal focuses on our club and essentially giving us an image before we can create our own. I am a strong believer that most people are actually libertarians they just don't know it, I want to bring awareness to this campus. That being said because I want to build this club from scratch I am having to find donors/sponsors on my own. I know this is a total long shot, but if any of y'all have any advice to help me get this club running, or who I could reach out to as potential donors, speakers, legislation to cover etc. I would really really appreciate it!
This seems like a great idea and I support what you are trying to do, but I can see how it might be difficult without someone to back your organization. What direction are you planning on going with the club? It would be a lot easier for people to make recommendations if we knew what exactly it was that you're trying to accomplish and what makes you different from other "free speech" school orgs.
For example I plan on structuring meetings by having a topic of the week, introduce legislation corresponding(ideally the ones kept out of media like securing America’s future act), have an open discussion on people’s stance regarding the legislation/issue, and discuss if we can take action how can we raise awareness and do so. For meetings that would have a guest speaker it would be in place of legislation. I am a strong believer me in free thought, and I want to essentially offer people a source for information. I don’t want to be affiliated with YAL, because I don’t want to have to oblige by their focus of the semester and endorse all that they do. I really want to give people a place where they can feel free, and fight for that freedom. There is more to being free than freedom of speech.
