Newly Discovered Mega-Volcano Off Philippines Has Biggest Caldera on Earth

A team including members from GNS Science have identified an ancient mega-volcano that could have the largest known caldera on Earth.
The 150km (93.2 miles) wide feature is on the crest of Benham Rise, an oceanic plateau off the Philippines coast. In comparison, the caldera at Taupō is about 35km (21.8 miles) wide, and that at Yellowstone about 60km (37.3 miles).

A pilot has snapped a breathtaking image of the aftermath of a violent volcanic eruption in the Philippines.
The picturesque Taal volcano blasted steam, ash, and rock up to 15 kilometers into the air when it dramatically increased in activity yesterday.
Philippine Airlines pilot Avelino Mendoza was approaching Manila from Sydney yesterday when he spotted the giant ash plume above the clouds.

3 Volcanic Eruptions From 3 Different Countries In 3 Days

3 VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS – In just a span of three days, three volcanic eruptions had occurred in volcanoes found in the Philippines, Japan, and Mexico.

On Sunday, January 12, Taal Volcano became active and is feared to have a hazardous explosive eruption. Meanwhile, In Japan, Mt. Shintake Erupted on Jan. 11, and Mexico’s Popocatepetl on January 9.

Rocks were spewed about 300 meters from the crater of Mount Shintake on the Kuhinoerabu Island in the Kagoshima Prefecture. In Mexico, the active Popocatepetl Volcano sent 3 kilometers of smoke with moderate ash in the air.
