Jamblang (Syzygium cumini) or also called jambu rivet and duwet is a kind of fruit tree of guava tribe (Myrtaceae). The fruit-bearing plant is also known by various names such as jambee kleng (Aceh), guava kling, nunang (Gayo), guava koliong (Riau), jambu kalang (Min.), Jambulang, jambulan, jombulan, jumblang (various local names in North Sulawesi), jambulan (Flores), jambula (Ternate), jamblang (Btw., Sd.). Also jambu juwat, jiwat, jiwat paddy (Jw.), Juwet, jujutan (Bl.), Dhuwak, dhalas (Md.), Duwe (Bima), Rappo - Rappo (Selayar) etc. In various foreign languages the fruit is known as jambulan, jambulana (Malaysia), duhat (Philippines), crested, jamun, or Java plum (Ingg.), etc. The scientific name is Syzygium cumini.
Distribution and habitat
Jamblang can be found in both cultivated / wild in tropical Asia and Australia. The jamblang tree has its natural dispersal areas in the subtropical Himalayas, India, Sri Lanka, Malesia and Australia. Currently it has been planted throughout the tropics and subtropics. In Java, it grows wild in teak forests and is cultivated as fruit trees in the yard, from lowlands up to 500 mdpl. However, it can grow at an altitude of 1800 masl. The rainfall needed for good growth is more than 1000 mm per year with a real dry season. Jamblang grows on the flood plain. This species is tolerant of drought and can grow in a variety of infertile soils, wetlands and well drained soils (clay soils, calcareous clays, sandy soils and calcareous soils).
