Sometimes last month I went to my sister's home to visit, and in the few days I spent with her, I noticed she had in one of the kitchen cabinets a big plastic bag filled with plastic bags or nylon in different sizes and colors.
I had to ask her why she has so many, and she said anytime she goes to the market or supermarket to get things, they pack her stuff in it for her, and she's too lazy to discard them. She just folds them neatly and keeps saying they might come in handy.
This is actually typical in most homes; you will definitely find a bag filled with smaller ones (nylon bags). Plastics are actually very flexible and very light to use, but they also have lots of disadvantages. Take, for instance:
Land pollution, if not deposed properly, causes landfills, which breed diseases causing harm to terrestrial life and are also unpleasant to the eyes.
Water pollution: when we have plastic floating on the water, it houses microorganisms in it, which contaminates our water, harming aquatic life and making it unfit for consumption.
The beautiful thing is we all can contribute to having a healthy and beautiful ecosystem because plastic can be recycled and reused. For instance, when going to the market or for groceries, we can go with our own shopping bags to reduce the use of plastic. We can also reuse plastic containers rather than throwing them out.
We can also recycle and dispose of it properly and also take part in cleaning out the environment and also engage in cleaning of small water bodies around us. We can actually have a plastic-free society by supporting plastic-free campaigns and all.
We can also save our environment by conserving the energy we use at home, in our offices, at school, etc. All we need to do is turn off our lights and other electronics appliances when we are not using them. We could also opt into using energy-efficient appliances.
With the rate at which trees are being cut down every day, we can opt to plant trees around our environment; this would help in absolving carbon dioxide.
