Music as commonly defined is the combination of sounds pleasant to the hearing. Music is agelong with human existence as the ability to hear and recognize sounds especially beautiful ones even from nature and other creatures is part of man. Music has been explored over the years by humans for entertainment, educative, healing, informative and peace/integrative uses. However, there is another remarkable side of music which is the income generation, wealth/value creation part of music which is the rewarding part of it.
Music over the years has evolved and has been a major source of income for individuals, organizations and the nation at large though the degree varies. Music as known serves as a platform for exchange of values i.e. skills, abilities, endowment, ideas/creatives which are rewarded both financially and non-financially i.e. in cash and in kind. Music has been the mainstay of income and wealth generation for individuals as artistes, composers, directors, instrumentalists, music instructors/teachers, producers etc. The following are different human endeavors where music generates income:
• Personal income generation through music
Many individuals like music artistes, musicians, instrumentalists, musical instruments sellers, music instructors/teachers, vocal trainers, music producers and others have their main source of income through music. For example, there are graduates of music employed in schools and institutions to teach and facilitates music. Personally by experience, i have come in contact with people who are music producers, trainers and facilitators whose main source of income comes through music.
• Family income generation through music
Back in the olden days even up till now in some part of Southwestern Nigeria where i hailed from, some certain families based on heritage are known for music and musically related activities called the "ÀYÀN" family practicing traditional/cultural music and are engaged for entertainment purposes during festivals, ceremonies like child naming, wedding, chieftaincy coronations and so on. Infact, they form cultural troupes and is their mainstay of income. Also, there are gospel musical artistes whose family have music as their main source of income by the involvement of the couple and their children. Notable among this is the Nigerian gospel singer, Tope Alabi whose family are fully involved in music alongside her.
• Organisational income generation through music
Some organisations have sponsored music related activities or supported it as a way of diversification and income generation. For example, MTN which is a communication giant sponspored the PROJECT FAME where talents were brought to limelight e.g. Iyanya who sang the song "Kukere" in Nigeria and also increase the branding and income generation of the communication company. Also, the Nigeria Idol is sponsored by Rites Foods Limited which are makers of the Bigi brands and by this generate income aswell as their branding/advertising.
In addition, some organization are into music production where music experts are employed whose source of income comes from this. For example, in Nigeria we have the popular Kenny Music and others.
•National income generation through music
One of the powerful and thriving industry/sector in Nigria is the Music industry. The music industry in Nigeria has many great artistes and talents which are celebrated both nationally, continentally and internationally. Notable few includes Nathaniel Bassey, Davido, King Sunny Ade, Burna Boy etc. The music industry in Nigeria is a viable one involving many people whose mainstay of income comes through music. This inturn impacts positively on the nation's revenue generation and income.
With positive developments in technology and been in a digital age, many artistes leverage on social media, blogs, websites, music channels, platforms etc which helped them to reach more people and generate more income as compared to the previous method of selling CDs which piracy has led many to lose. Through subscriptions, downloads on music platforms, music artistes makes huge income leveraging on technological advancement. Personally, music has provided me a passive source of income through the HIVE platform and other avenues.
