When traveling through Iceland one thing is guaranteed. You will see Icelandic horses! They are everywhere, winter or summer, it doesn't matter. These animals are pretty much self supporting. In winter time, especially in snowy conditions the farmers will bring them extra grass since they cannot reach the grass underneath the snow.
The horses live in wide areas, but are always owned by farmers or other people. They're not wild horses although they behave pretty wild. You should be careful when driving close to them, they might kick and damage you car.
Most of the time you'll see them they are behind a fence separating their space and the road. When I visited Iceland, it was winter time. So the horses were very interested when all of the sudden a cars stopped. You might bring extra grass for all they know. So most of the times when I stopped the horses came quickly towards me, not giving me much chance to take a photo. Eventually I managed to get some shots of them in their natural surroundings.
I hope you like them!
Cheers,
Thijs
How incredible to know that if you travel to Iceland, it is safe to see horses.
I've always wanted one, I love them.
Today I can say that Icelandic horses are the most beautiful I have ever seen.
The photos are incredible.
Thank you very much! Yes, they are adorable, sometimes a bit too eager to see who you are, but really fun to watch them. I love them too!
Oh my goodness, they are beautiful. My nice is a 'horse whisperer, and trains horses. She would love these beautiful animals. Thank you for sharing them.
This is amazing! When I was younger, I used to ride horses. I would enjoy my stay if I ever visit Iceland! :) Very beautiful photography.
Thanks a lot! I hope one day you have the opportunity to go there! 😀
Many years ago I used to run a photography site and we had a load of contributors on there. I could replicate it here to be honest. Anyway one of the contributors was an Icelandic photographer and church minister called Bragi Ingibergsson and his photos often included the horses. I’ve always wanted to see them. So thanks for these great pictures!

That is very interesting! Thanks a lot for sharing this. I’ll certainly have a good look. And I’m happy to hear my photography brought back those memories. 😀🙏
It certainly did bring them back. My old site was pre-social media but there it was, people could comment and vote on each others photography. Bragi was over them. I’d only ever anticipated the site would be used by people in my real friend group but we discovered friends from around the world.
I’ll do a post on it!!!
Awesome, I’m looking forward to it! Sounds like you were ahead of time with that idea! 😀👍
I’ll mention you when i write it, so you’ll know it’s there
😀👍
There are also plenty of this type of wild horse in the İçanadolu region of Turkey. They can easily find food in summer, but in winter they are fed by the locals.
Very interesting. I’m still planning to return to Turkey, I would love to visit Göbeklitepe and Istanbul once.
Definitely must see places. I definitely recommend you to come.

As far as I can tell, these are wild horses, and we here in Romania have areas where these magnificent animals grow wild and are protected by law.
I really like that! In the Netherlands we have some areas where wilde horses live too. In Iceland the areas where they live are so much bigger. And since they live there year in year our, they have become pretty wild.
Iceland is on my list to visit one day… can’t wait 😎Wow what a beautiful captures of these horses @thijsvermeer. Just stunning… and the pink purple-ish backdrop.
Thanks! Yes, Iceland provides some stunning backdrops every once in a while. Just being there and have the opportunity to shoot some images makes it worth visiting
I can imagine. It would be a dream come true.
One day 😉😎You are welcome @thijsvermeer
You were able to get some awesome shots of the horses.
Thanks a lot! 😀👍
@roekeya such pretty horses! @thijsvermeer awesome photo.
