When you want to take a break from the big city in Vienna, head to the park. Not in the centre, but in Donaupark on the left bank of the Danube. The metro will take you there to Kaisermühlen station.
If you enter the park from this side, you can't miss the bust of Chilean President Salvador Allende. A lifelong socialist, Allende was elected president of Chile in 1970 and immediately after coming to power began implementing socialist reforms, including nationalisation. Allende was only finally stopped by a military coup under General Pinochet. It is a paradox that the man whose socialist experiments brought Chile to near ruin has a bust in a park in Vienna, while the man who saved his country from socialism has nothing.
Když si ve Vídni chcete oddychnout od ruchu velkoměsta, zajdete si do parku. Ne někam do centra, ale třeba do Donaupark na levém břehu Dunaje. Přiveze vás tam metro do stanice Kaisermühlen.
Vejdete-li do parku z této strany, nemůžete minout bustu chilského prezidenta Salvadora Allende. Celoživotní socialista Allende byl zvolen chilským prezidentem v roce 1970 a hned po svém nástupu k moci začal provádět socialistické reformy včetně znárodňování. Allende byl nakonec zastavený až vojenským převratem pod velením generála Pinocheta. Je paradoxem, že ten, jehož socialistické experimenty přivedly Chile téměř ke krachu ve vídeňském parku bustu má, zatímco ten, kdo svou zemi před socialismem zachránil, nemá nikde nic.
At the other end of the park is the bust of another communist luminary ‒ an idol of youth, a romantic revolutionary, and a murderer, Ernesto "Che" Guevara. In the famous iconic photograph by Alberto Korda, Guevara looks like a rock star with his flowing hair, while his expression on the bronze bust in Donaupark seems somewhat dull to me. It's hard to say which of his faces was the true one.
Na druhém konci parku má bustu další komunistický výtečník ‒ idol mládeže, romantický revolucionář a vrah Ernesto „Che“ Guevara. Na známé ikonické fotografii Alberto Kordy vypadá Guevara s rozevlátými vlasy jako rocková hvězda, zatímco jeho výraz na bronzové bustě v Donauparku mi připadá poněkud tupý. Těžko říct, která z jeho tváří byla ta pravá.
The fascination with socialist or possibly communist politicians may seem incomprehensible, especially to us who have experience with such a government. But let’s continue our walk through Vienna. We’ll toughen up.
A short distance from the imperial residence in Schönbrunn, on Schönbrunner Schloßstraße, is the Pension Schönbrunn. And on its wall ‒ a memorial plaque dedicated to Joseph Stalin. This Stalin memorial plaque occasionally becomes a topic in the Vienna city council, but any objections are brushed aside with the comment that “it is part of history…” From this perspective, the Viennese could leave the square Rathausplatz with the name it had after an Austrian native from 1938 to 1945. That was also part of history.
Fascinace socialistickými, případně komunistickými politiky se může zdát nepochopitelná, zvlášť nám, kteří máme s takovou vládou zkušenost. Ale pojďme procházkou po Vídni dál. Přitvrdíme.
Kousek od císařské rezidence v Schönbrunu, v ulici Schönbrunner Schloßstraße je Penzion Schönbrunn. A na jeho zdi ‒ pamětní deska věnovaná Josefu Stalinovi. Tato Stalinova pamětní deska se občas stává tématem ve vídeňském zastupitelstvu, ale jakékoliv námitky jsou smeteny tím, že „je to součást historie...". Z tohoto úhlu pohledu by Vídeňáci mohli nechat náměstí Rathausplatz název, který mělo po jednom rakouském rodákovi v letech 1938 ‒ 1945. To byla taky součást historie.

When I was at the Danube park some years ago (I worked in one of the offices nearby and spent some time during lunch break there when the weather was nice), I also stumbled about these bizarre busts. Only understandable if one knows that the town government is deeply red since after WW2.
