It's been quite a while since my last post, I had hoped to get a more regular schedule of posting but that didn't quite happen. There's also a little less for a macro photographer to do in the winter months, no cute little spiders running about and not many flowers either.
However, it's now the very beginning of spring here! Still cold, only 9 degrees today but I did manage to get some shots of a lovely early blooming plum tree!
There was a cute little bee there too!
Her little "baskets" on the rear legs are packed with pollen! Plums are an important food source early in the season for bees, as are many dandelions and so called weeds.
Overcast days are still very good for photography! The clouds act as a giant softbox and provide a soft light without harsh shadows. Another way to take advantage of clouds on an day like this is to bump up the exposure resulting in a colourful near silhouette against a bright white background.
Sometimes the background isn't a nice soft cloud bank. In this example I used a short DOF to get the subject in sharp focus to separate it from a complex background. If everything in this frame was in sharp focus the delicate tufts of the seeds would be lost completely.
Last, the ducks, or more specifically widegeons are back and starting to pair up. In a few months there will be lots of cute little ducklings paddling around after their parents:
