So I've had plenty of time to reflect over the last 6 days as total Lockdown cabin fever sets in.
N.Z. was lulled into a sense of false security as we had 6 months of no cases and being a few islands down here at the bottom of the world we thought we had Covid beat.
Then along came the Delta variant.
So I'm posting for the second or third time this week (I'm not sure anymore)My photos give me a channel to keep me relatively sane so it's therapy in a away. After this I'm off for another long walk in the neighbourhood which is pretty much all we can do to get out of the house.Masks are compulsory and good old social distancing too-did we even know what that meant 18 months ago??
Reflections fascinate me so that is this post's theme.
All images seen thru a lens are reflections-which means all photography is reflection in a way-I'll keep it simple as I don't totally know all the physics! It's all about light in the end and how we capture it, thru lenses and sensors.
A mirror is obviously a great way of creating reflections. A mirror image of what we see.
The sea when calm is another way to create reflections. All good calendar images look like this. Lovely.
But boring to me after a while.
If you can capture a reflection at just the right instant they can be fascinating. Our brain doesn't know how to process the mirror images. A lot of reflections are very fleeting. I waited for half an hour to get the shot I wanted here.
Me in a quiet moment of reflection surrounded by reflections from the pools of water and the angle of the sunlight Obviously you need a friend to capture such images.
This is a lily pond in a tropical greenhouse. The still water and high glass ceiling make a complicated and multi level image added to by shadows.
Now onto my favourite reflections-street reflections. These images are multi dimensional and often hard to grasp at first-they are fragmented reflections. Shop fronts often provide large windows facing busy roads so the reflections are constantly changing-like life. Room service??
If it has rained and the light is right reflections spring up all over-downtown Auckland.
As I said some reflections last only a few seconds or less. Sunset in the apartment block opposite where I live-this is where having a mobile phone with a decent lens comes in very handy. A pure luck right time right place image.
My favourite street reflection. This image reveals (to me anyway)the objectivisation of women as anonymous and faceless sex objects. I love the lurid colours of party dresses and the pose. Sad installation but a cool image to me.
Another reflection that speaks to me. Looking for love in all the wrong places?? Hard to figure out where the shop front starts and the road ends.
Finally another type of reflection I like-reflections in Nature. The dark tones of the stream and the banks highlight the bright reflection in the small pond. A tranquil place in time.
So that's it-reflections on reflections. I will post another reflections piece if there is enough interest. Hope you enjoyed this post and are not sick of the frequency of them - like I say it's therapy for me at present. If you are in lockdown I feel for you. Grab your mobile and get out if you can-you never know where you'll come across the magic of reflection!
