Greetings!
It wouldn't be wrong to say our eyes are the gateways to our minds. The way eyes function, they send signals to our brains. So, what we see sometimes needs to be filtered in order not to keep sending unwanted signals to our brains. Yes, this is Visual Noise and it can have a negative impact on us. Personally, I get the visual noise not even from my localty but fom social media. We are in a computer age where we spend quality time on our phones. Several activities go on on social media both positive and negative, that our eyes keep wandering from one activity to another. In fact, thousands of content are on social media, ranging from video contents, skits, games, jokes and the likes. While I don't necessarily need some of these, I find myself gazing at them with so much attention burning my time and data.
Having had so much visual noise in the day, a lot used to happen in my sleep at night like talking while sleeping, sudden screaming from sleep and lots more. I never knew this was a problem until my husband started complaining. Then, I sat myself down and wondered how I had been using my hard earned money to buy myself 'noise'. I wondered how I would buy data in this hard economy and all I could get from it was sleepless nights. I wondered how I would stay 2hours up at night just to watch horror movies, some of which have no edifying messages but scary atmosphere. Only to suffer nightmares and sleepless nights because of what I had seen and passed to my brain.
Oh! It was too much that I needed no one to tell me to stop. I knew it was time to cultivate better habits and stop the unnecessary visual pollution. I knew I needed new habits and lifestyle to be a better person. So, I adopted a minimalist lifestyle. I started by reducing the volume of data, I subscribe on my phone every week. I came up with certain amount of data for a week and a strict rule that once it finishes even if it's on Wednesday, that would be the end for that week, no other subscription till the following week. This is not because I don't have money to subscribe but just to curb watching the unnecessary and for me to make a judicious use of my data and time resources. Surprisingly, this practice has really been so helpful that one can only see me on social media just doing the needful.
I also went further to delete some of the Apps where I watch those things that don't add value to me. Oh! I never thought that could be possible. I was almost addicted to some App. My eyes and and hands were already addicted to it, that I often clicked on it more than I clicked on my study App. You know, I would just want to see what was going on. In fact, deleting those Apps was like breaking a boundage. I felt so free and had a less clumsy brain. Little did I know that those App were even the most consuming and fast data burning App on my phone. How I love this my new minimalist lifestyle! The subscription I burn in a week over visual noise is what now sustains me a whole month. What a wonder! In order not to go back to them, I replace those App with better ones that help me think, create and innovate like this very one that I'm writing through, and also making some money through. What a best strategy!
The last thing I did to reduce the visual noise I expose myself to was cleaning up my phone by deleting the unwanted movies. I then decided to streamline the type of movies I now watch. It is no more 'anything goes'. My phone is no more trash depot, any video that has no valuable thing to offer cannot enter my phone. My friends can no longer rush to me to share me anyhow movies again. Infact, before I ask, they have already answered with 'Not your type of movie'.To me, that's a great compliment. I'm setting standards and I'm happy. I am now a jolly friend with the permission manager on my phone. No unwanted visual signal can just enter my phone anymore. My brain needs to work effectively, I don't need visual noise. In fact, I now feel like I have more than the the usual 24hrs a day. I do the needful within the frame of time and still have my leisure. I now enjoy seeing more of nature and appreciating the works of God. I visit mountains on my free days and enjoy serenity.
I also do some meditations and recreation thereafter.
Thanks to my minimalist lifestyle, visual noise has reduced drastically.
This is my entry for KISS # 138 prompt.
