Brown Leaves…….My Actifit Report Card: September 18 2024

in Actifit18 hours ago (edited)

Fall-a time of beautiful colors……or so one would think. 😏 The thing about fall color in the PNW, or at least my corner of it, is that despite all of the forests with tons of maple and other species, if the summer weather isn’t just right, the color sort of ‘greys’ out and is dull. That is what has happened this year. We had not as hot and dry of a year here but also more humidity in general. That’s a perfect combination for powdery mildew which inhibits the color emergingfully as the leaves just sort of wither, turn greyish and fall to the ground. The best combination is a super hot summer with little to no precipitation. We didn’t have that this year.

That’s not to say you might not find pockets of color here and there; it’s just not super likely. As I drive home from work, I can gaze at Sumas Mountain and the surrounding ones and see a bit of a dull mustard looking color with a heavy dose of grey about it. So sad……🍁

Here’s some detailed brown leaves and some Turkey Tail ‘shrooms.

Look at the bark of this fir tree. It is super thick with large ridges! It’s a fairly old tree-I’d estimate around 100-150 years without actually doing the math.

Here is a rhododendron with some leaves that usually don’t turn. Perhaps it is culling them from the shrub.

That’s gonna be it for today. Take care and have a blessed rest of your day! 🙏🙏🇮🇱🇺🇦

Wait, isn't there still time? It's early yet. Our colors are just starting to turn. And we will need the weather to turn chill before the leaves truly comply. I hope you get some good color yet this season!

Hey @jayna! We could still see some color from the vine maples, but so much of our deciduous trees are either big leaf maple, alder, and elm. They get that powdery mildew stuff going on and it ruins the color change for the most part. Right now, we should be seeing some brilliant yellows emerge, but they just sort of wither and fall off the tree. It's even early for that!

I don't mean to sound like a pessimist, but after living here all this time, it's what happens when we have a summer like we've had.

Thank you for stopping by and for the color wishes! Take care!

The Great Pumpkin is coming... 🎃

🎃🤗💜 It will be awesome!
