Wooden Carved Collar for my Kitten (November Contest) [ENG-ESP]

Hello dear friends of DIY Hub, I hope you are all doing well. The reason for my post is to participate in the November contest, which focuses on our relationship with our pets and animals in general. It's a lovely contest, and I've taken this opportunity to express my love for my little cat, Lali. I've made a necklace with a wooden cat carving. The necklace itself is made of woven yarn, so you could say there are two techniques involved in creating this piece: yarn weaving and wood carving. Below, I'll show you step-by-step how I made it. I hope you like it. Let's begin!

Hola queridos amigos de DiyHub espero que se encuentren muy bien, el motivo de mi publicación es unirme al concurso del mes de noviembre, el cual esta orientado a nuestra relación con nuestras mascotas y los animales en general. Es un concurso muy bonito y he aprovechado para manifestar el amor hacia mi pequeña gatita Lali. He realizado un collar el cual tiene una figura tallada en madera con forma de gato, el collas esta hecho de hilo tejido, por lo cual se podría decir que hay dos técnicas para lograr una pieza, el tejido de hilo y el tallado de madera. a continuación les presento paso a paso como lo hice, espero que les guste. Comencemos!

PROCESS

Since the wood carving process is more complex, I begin preparing the wood. I've cut a piece of wood that is 3 centimeters on each side and 1 centimeter thick. On one of its faces, which I clean very well, I begin drawing the image of a cat with a pencil. It doesn't need to be a very elaborate design, just one that meets expectations and ensures that when I finish carving the figure, it's actually a cat and not some other strange creature, haha.

Como el proceso de tallado de madera es más complejo, comienzo a preparar la madera. He cortado un trozo de madera que tiene 3 centímetros por cada uno de sus lados mientras que tiene 1 centímetro de espesor, por una de sus caras la cual limpio muy bien comienzo a dibujar la efigie de un gato, el cual lo voy dibujando con un lápiz, no se necesita un diseño muy elaborado, sino uno que cumpla con las expectativas y que cuando termine de tallar la figura si sea de un gato y no otra criatura extraña jeje.

To shape the cat, I begin carving the edges, specifically the left side, following the outline of the drawing. Using a knife, I carefully cut the wood. Little by little, I shape the ears and part of the head. When I reach the bottom, I change the knife and use one with a circular blade, which is especially useful for making circular cuts, like the ones needed at the bottom.

Para darle forma al gato comienzo a tallar por los bordes, específicamente el lado izquierdo, siguiendo el trazo del dibujo, con una navaja voy cortando cuidadosamente la madera. Poco a poco le voy dando la forma por las orejas y parte de la cabeza, al llegar la parte inferior cambio la cuchilla y utilizo una que tiene la hoja circular, esta sirve especialmente para hacer cortes circulares, como que le se necesita en la parte inferior.

Next, I start on the right side as well, doing exactly the same thing, removing most of the wood with a knife that has a wider blade, so the carved wood area is much larger. Then, on the bottom, I use the circular blade. As you can see, the bottom of both sides is where the cat's shape is completed. Now all that's left is to remove the part between each of the ears.

Seguidamente comienzo también del lado derecho, haciendo exactamente lo mismo, retirando la mayor parte de madera con una navaja que tenga la hoja más ancha, así el espacio de madera tallada es mucho mayor, y luego en la parte inferior utilizo la cuchilla circular, como pueden ver en la parte inferior de ambos lado es dond etermina de tener forma el gato. Ahora solo flata quitar la parte entre cada una de las orejas.

As I mentioned before, I remove the wood in the upper space between the ears. Here I change blades and use a flat-tipped one to remove most of the wood. You can see the final shape along all the edges of the cat.

Como emncioné antes, retiro la madera en el espacio superior entre las orejas, aquí cambio de cuchilla y utilizo una de punta plana para poder sacar la mayor parte de la madera. Se puede ver la forma final por todos los bordes del gato.

Now I need to shape the inside of the face to give it volume and depth. I'll start with the ears, where I make small cuts to later remove the wood, leaving a large cut so you can see how it's exposed. To remove the wood, I use a blade with a flat tip. I repeat the same process on the other ear, and you can see how it's coming along.

Ahora me toca darle forma al interior del rostro para que tenga volumen y profundidad, comienzo entonces con las orejas, en donde hago unos pequeños cortes para luego extraer la madera dejando un gran corte y que se pueda ver como queda expuesto. Para extraer la mader autilizo la cuchilla con la punta plana, el mismo proceso lo vuelvo a repetir en la otra oreja, y se puede ver como va quedando.

Next, I carve and shape the lower half of the head, including the eyes and nose. Here, I repeat the previous step I did with the ears, except that I remove a little more wood where the eyes will be. Once this step is complete, I begin to use the thinnest blade to remove the wood and shape the eyes.

Seguidamente toca tallar y darle forma a la mitad de la cabeza hacia abajo, eso incluye los ojos y la nariz. Aquí voy repitiendo el paso anterior que hice con las orejas, con la diferencia que en el lguar donde van los ojos, retiro un poco más de madera. Una vez realizado este paso comienzo a hundir la cuchilla más fina de todas para extraer la madera y así darle forma a los ojos.

I've now finished carving the wood. I'm starting to sand the entire piece with very fine sandpaper, leaving the surface completely smooth and clean. Then I attach a small hook for the necklace and dip it in gloss varnish. I repeat this process three times to ensure the wood is properly sealed and has a glossy finish.

Aquí ya he finalizado el proceso de tallar la madera, ahora comienzo a lijar toda la pieza con una lija muy suave y fina y así dejo la superficie de la pieza totalmente pulida y limpia, luego le coloco un pequeño gancho para el collar y lo sumerjo en barníz brillante. Este proceso lo repito 3 veces para asegurarme que la madera quede bien sellada y a la vez brillante.

Next, I started making the collar, which isn't very complicated. You only need yarn; in this case, I used black. To knit it, I just used the simplest stitch and a knitting needle. Little by little, stitch by stitch, the base came together. Then I worked it around until I finished. The collar ended up about the size of a bracelet, but big enough for my cat to wear. I added the wooden cat piece, and that's how it was finished. Now comes the photo shoot with the model.

Seguidamente comienzo a hacer el collar el cual no es muy complicado, solo se utiliza hilo, en este caos utilicé de color negro, y para tejer solo utilicé la base más sencilla y una aguja de tejer. Poco a poco punto por punto iba saliendo la base, luego le di una vuelta hasta finalizar, el collar quedó del tamaño de una pulsera, pero del tamaño suficiente para que mi gata lo use como collar, le pude la pieza de gato tallada en mader ay así quedó finalizado, ahora viene la sesión de fotos de la modelo.

That's what happened once when I did her portrait; she was posing like a goddess, and I was her slave, hehe. And now I see she's enjoying her new accessory.
