Hello to you,
I am the first time here, came through futureminds comment and was looking in awe at your "new" sewing machine, which I would buy right away! It's such a nice piece of machine. What do you sow with it?
What brand is it and from which year, can you tell me?
I also did not know about the "DIYHub" tag, is it something which is around for quite a time? I used "DIY" as a tag, so far. Excuse my many questions.
What I liked about your post is the lightness and the feeling that you enjoy the things you use in a certain manner. For me, it's the same - I love my (thrifted) things and felt reminded of some good days where I had the opportunity to visit some thrift stores in CAL (years ago). I envy you living in a small town.
Greet your neighbors from a German woman :)
The machine is a Kenmore (Sears) but I'm told it was made in Japan by the White sewing machine company (I think they were partners with Singer? at one time)
Mama had a Singer when I was small, and I grew up tinkering with it; wouldn't call myself a sewer by any means, but I am tired of asking others to hem my pants etc... those curtains in my bedroom (the magenta ones) need lining, so I have projects ahead of me
I do not know how long the DIYHub community has been around, I haven't known about it but about 5 months?
Until about 2 yrs ago when I got Disability through the military, I was quite low income, so I did without, or shopped at thrift stores.
Frugality became a habit, and not that I DO have a moderate income, I make it stretch.
Mableton isn't really a town per se, that may change soon, as there is a vote upcoming for "Cityhood" (I am against it myself)
This is a suburb of Atlanta Ga, so it is like a small town surrounded by city.
This is Mableton, my house is marked in red
Here it is in relation to Hotlanta
So greetings from a Georgia Country boyWhy what a pleasant surprise @erh.germany, thank you for the comment. https://peakd.com/c/hive-189641/ https://discord.gg/UmDuWesa This is their discord server
Hey, thank you for providing me with a map, so I can see where you are located. Atlanta was mentioned in the context of having a huge casino, when I was in CAL. Otherwise, I know nothing about the area. Compared to it, your village looks idyllic.
I don't know whether Singer and the Japanese production company partnered with each other. My mother used to sew with a treadle machine that is a bit older than your model. I forgot the brand. We now use it as a coffee table/station at my brothers house.
I am also living kind of a frugal live, I like it to improvise and make something out of "nothing" :) Scarcity can be quite nice if it's self chosen and not forced upon one.
For making hems for pants or curtains you certainly will do a fine job. Over time I found out that I like it better to sew hems by hand, it gives a nicer and more clean finish for my taste. It takes longer but I use it as a meditative form of getting things done (in slow motion).
Bye from the northern part of Germany!
We also used to have a treadle machine, and I played around with it a lot until the leather belt broke, (which them made an excellent cat plaything; I drove my cat bonkers with that thing ha ha ha)Hi and good morning @erh.germany, I don't know of any Casino's IN Atlanta (and I think I would have heard by now if there were) but there are at least two within an hours drive of here, in S Carolina and Alabama.
I really don't have the patience to properly sew by hand. I quickly get tired of it and start doing "whip stitches" which do the job for a while but ain't at all perty, although I can easily see how it would be meditative and calming for most people
