(40k) Battle Report: Da Orkish Civil WAAAAAGHHH!! Plus, freshly painted minis.

Hello friends,

Life has been very busy and it's been a month since I've been able to get to the local game store and play some Warhammer. It's very easy to tell yourself that, on a Friday night, you just want to stay home and rest after a long week. I've been trying to get as much of my force as possible painted up so this has also kept me away from the play table.

This is all to say I was especially excited to head on down to the store with a new list and my first fully painted minis. Have a look at the MegaNobz I've been working on these days.

The Battle: Orkish Civil WAAAAAGGHHH!!

I reached out on the discord earlier this week to see if anyone wanted to trade a Ork Beastboss on Squigosaur for pretty much any other Ork units. I bought this guy right before his rules changes completely he has no place in my army. I met a very nice Ork player who was happy to get rid of some extra Deffkoptas to expand on the squig theme in his army. Good deal!

When pairings got laid out he and I seemed to be a good match. I had only brought 1k points of Orks and a specific list. I have a TBI and have found that taking notes before the game helps me keep all the rules straight while focusing on basics like dice rolling math. Before ever game I type up some notes to go with my list including tips for deployment, movement, prematch questions, and combat notes. The combat notes are especially helpful and look something like this:

All and all super helpful for keeping my Orks in a row and even post match review to find things I missed and should utilize in future games.

Anyhow, let's get into the game!

My force here was a highly armored crew of MegaNobz and Nobz led by Warbosses delivered to the front lines via Trukks. I also brought Gretchin to grab objectives and a squad of Lootas for a tiny bit of ranged threat. I was using a detachment that gives me extra melee damage.

My opponent was playing Beastsnaggaz, savage primitive Orks who mount war-squigs (think a wreckingball with teeth) and charge into battle with the hope of taking down the biggest prey they can. There were 2 squads of beastsnagga boys,a very scary Beastboss on Squigasaur leading Squighog boys, and a giant Deff Dread with claws and flamethrowers. Sheesh!

After deployment I rolled well and got to go first. I charged my Trukks up the field but tried to end their movement in cover where possible. I took the center objective with my Lootas and started blasting one of the clumps of beastsnagga boys. After I had smeared them off the board we realized I had really messed up and my Lootas could not even see those boyz from their location in cover. Cover in 40k is tricky for newer players and, put simply, I fucked up.

I apologized and asked my opponent to put all his troops back on the board and let my Lootas where they were, hella exposed. You can also see some Nobz with Klaws being lead by a Warboss here and some gretchin holding objective.

My second Trukk full of MegaNobz with Dual Killsaws lead by a Warboss in MegaArmor covered another objective. I hid the Megas behind the Trukk here and this ended up being majorly important.

Very quickly my opponent had moved his Squigs around, declared my trukk it's 'Prey', and moved in. You can also see just behind it here that my enemies Deff Dread moved into the midfield and engaged my Lootas with claw and flame!

My Trukk was made short work of. It was torn apart with spears and squig-jaws. Thankfully I was able to charge in my Nobz who dealt some damage before also being demolished by the primitive Ork hunters.

I had another group of MegaNobz with Killsaws my opponent had forgotten about who were able to charge in on the flank and make squighog boy sushi. Saving the day and keeping me in the fight.

On the far flank my other Trukk had also been demolished. I was able to roll a 6 on Deadly Demise turning it into a Trukk-Bomb and moved it away from my troops taking out a few of the beastsnagga boyz. The rest were made short work of when my Megas charges in. Killsaws are well named. I believe I was able to get the second group of beastsnaggas to counter-charge me but my armor prevailed and they went down in my 'Fight Back' phase.

Soon my opponents units were dwindling and it was clear they did not have enough heavy weapons left to take down the 10 MegaNobz I still had on the field. I also had amassed 4 command point an, if my opponent was somehow able to kill them all I could use those points to give them 'Fights on Death'. We agreed I had the win and both complimented each other on the really fun game.

While this went my way it could very well have went the other way. I believe I won this engagment by getting my opponent to engage my Trukks where possible. Taking down a Trukk is no small task and within 2 turns my opponent had killed both of mine. If those hit's had gone into my infantry instead I would have been toast.

The internet has decided that MegaNobz are no longer good due to recent nerfs. In my experience, thats bullshit. My Megas with Dual Killsaws are my more reliable troops. They require Trukks to shuttle them to the front line but that's a ball price to pay and, this game has shown those Trukks can be used as effective shields.
