Nunca es sencillo competir con buenos resultados en un juego olímpico, se debe enfrentar a los mejores en cada especialidad y con el agregado del incentivo que se siente al estar en tan magna competencia.
En el día de ayer se esfumó, quizás demasiado rápido, la posibilidad de obtener una medalla en el rugby seven, probablemente una de las especialidades donde particularmente yo tenía esperanzas de un buen resultado, hasta me animé a pensar en la presea dorada.
Como casi todos, caí en la trampa de las estadísticas. La Argentina venía de obtener hace muy pocas semanas el título de campeón de la liga mundial de rugby seven (SVNS), había jugado de manera magistral en las primeras fechas y aunque tuvo un bajón en las dos o tres últimas presentaciones, la ventaja obtenida en aquellas primeras fechas le permitieron quedarse con el primer lugar. En esa liga enfrentó a todas las naciones más fuertes del planeta en esta especialidad reducida a solo 7 jugadores y en el balance general terminó imponiéndose a todas ellas.
Pero eso fue una liga y esto son los juegos olímpicos. Las estadísticas solo sirven para especular, pero no para ganar los encuentros.
Argentina ganó de manera bastante sencilla sus primeros dos partidos ante Kenia y Samoa, pero luego perdió ante Australia, allí estuvo la clave ya que al quedar segunda en el grupo debió enfrenta al local Francia en cuartos de final, el equipo galo además de ser local es uno de los principales animadores de este deporte a nivel mundial.
En este encuentro sucumbió al regalar el primer tiempo donde los franceses se retiraron al descanso con un 21 a 0 (3 tries y sus respectivas conversiones) que a la postre se hizo indescontable. El equipo argentino salió con toda la concentración a jugar del segundo tiempo y descontó rápidamente para ponerse a solo un try, además tenía la ventaja de un jugador de más por la amarilla a Jordan Sepho, pero el empate y en definitiva, la posibilidad de jugar por una medalla se escapó en el último minuto cuando un try de Antoine Dupont, considerado el mejor del mundo en rugby XV, puso cifras definitivas en el marcador.
Esta versión reducida del juego de rugby se desarrolla en dos tiempos de 5 minutos, por supuesto el campo de juego es el mismo del deporte tradicional y por lo tanto el esfuerzo por cubrir tanta cantidad de espacio con tan pocos participantes es inmenso, de ahí el escaso tiempo del que se dispone. El juego es muchísimo más dinámico y generalmente los marcadores son más abultados. De todas maneras, la versión reducida es muy atractiva y en general los mismos equipos que tienen supremacía en la versión de su hermano mayor, también dominan en esta otra.
Argentina ahora solo podrá dirimir los puestos 5to a 8vo. que no es poco y determinará la obtención del diploma olímpico para los equipos que obtengan esas posiciones finales.
Sin embargo, la decepción fue grande, todos esperábamos más en este deporte que es uno de los pocos en que teníamos posibilidades concretas.

In that league, it faced all the strongest nations on the planet in this specialty reduced to only 7 players and in the overall balance, it ended up imposing itself on all of them.
But that was a league and these are the Olympic games. Statistics are only good for speculation, but not for winning matches.

However, the disappointment was great, we all expected more in this sport, which is one of the few in which we had concrete possibilities.

Lo entiendo muy bien.
Hay pequeños detalles o detalles que a la postre pesan y como bien dices, esa derrota contra Australia los envió a los cuartos con un equipo muy fuerte que se vuelve más duro por el hecho de ser sede de los juegos.
No dominó este deporte, pero, por sus publicaciones y por lo que he leído para aprender pensé que podían estar entre los 4 grandes.
Pero, el deporte es así y, lo que toca ahora es intentar alcanzar la mejor ubicación posible y regresar con el Diploma Olímpico, algo que muy pocos podrán exhibir. Feliz jornada. Salud y saludos.
