Whale shark watching in Oslob, Cebu

in TravelFeed2 years ago (edited)

I have always been curious about how it feels to be able to swim with the largest species in the ocean and see them in person. I read some posts on Facebook about their experience with whale shark watching and that it was fun, they said. I told myself that one day I would be able to swim with the famous whale shark in Oslob, and finally, after years of dreaming, I was able to see the whale shark in person.

While we were in Cebu, we took the opportunity to see and swim with the whale shark. Whale shark watching is located in Oslob, Cebu. Oslob is a tiny seaside town located on the southernmost edge of the Cebu mainland. It has lately become a popular tourist site due to whale-shark expeditions. From Cebu City, we traveled 3 hours to get there. We arrived at 5 p.m. in the afternoon and checked in to our hotel since whale shark watching was on the next day. It is said that it’s better to arrive at the location early in the morning, preferably at 4 a.m., since there are a lot of tourists and you still have to fall in line, register, and wait for your turn.

We woke up at 4 a.m. and went straight to the location; it's walking distance from our inn, which is very convenient. When we arrived, there were already tourists waiting in line. After we registered, we waited until 6 a.m. for the activity to start and were briefed about what not to do while swimming with the whale shark. You even have to pay a penalty once you violate the rules.

Our boat number is 48, but we don’t have to wait long since they have many boats that will bring you to the area where the whale sharks are. When we arrived in the area, we were instructed to go in the water and just stay close to the boat. It was huge. I was terrified at first, especially when they got closer and were behind our backs, and when they opened their mouth, but the longer we stayed, I no longer felt scared. It was really fun swimming with the whale sharks. I find them cute. They will give you 30 minutes to swim. I took pictures with the whale sharks; I really enjoy swimming with them, and the time was very limited since there were many tourists coming after.

This experience is very memorable and a dream come true hahaha, I only saw them on Facebook before, and now I get to see them in person and even enjoy the ocean with them. You really need to follow the rules when you get to the water for the protection of the whale and for yourself as well. Big thanks to our tour guide, Kuya Jim he was so nice and cool we get to know his life story in just a short period of time hahaha. If, by chance, I will visit this place again and bring my best friends with me, they’ll surely enjoy this activity.
