How do we deal with addiction in life? (Part 1 of 3) | The Old Path (My Review)

Bible text: Hebrews 11:24

Addiction is one of the problems that we face today, not only in our society but globally as well. People fall into addictions of different types. We see people addicted to alcohol, drugs, pornography, masturbation, and various other vices.

All these vices cause more harm than good to their victims. There are drugs that can destroy a person's being within 24 hours. Some of the people that partake of these drugs take them for the purpose of relaxation. But they abuse it in the process, which ends up harming them.

The intake of the substances sometimes leads to panic attacks, a stroke, or even mental breakdowns, among many others. Addiction does nothing but destroy one's self. And gradually it is seen destroying the earth as well due to its large spread.

The Bible makes us know that addictions are pleasures of the flesh. We are not to dwell on these cravings. They could end up cutting our lives short. The first way to overcome addiction is to make a decision to stop.

We have to be intentional about quitting the lifestyle, though it may feel pleasing. Let's read the book of Hebrews 11:24.

24 - By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;
25 - Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

Sin is pleasing. That addiction someone is clinged to is pleasing to him. All these pleasures bring satisfaction to the flesh. But such pleasure is harmful to our spiritual being. The verse above tells us about Moses's firm decision to depart from Egypt because of the sin it was surrounded by.

Despite his status as the daughter of Pharaoh, a personality held in high esteem, he chose to suffer affliction rather than dwell in the pleasures of the flesh. We must decide to deny ourselves of these fleshly pleasures so that we don't end up being consumed by them.
