Depression and anxiety — how to overcome these biblically (Part 3 of 3) | The Old Path

Bible references: Job 2:9-10, Job 1:21

Not a single human being that dies goes without the consent of God. There is no death of a person that takes God unaware. He is fully aware of the departure of every single human, just as He was aware and responsible for us coming into the earth.

Brother Eli makes a very crucial statement: "We are not to be preoccupied by death, but rather we should be concerned about what is coming forth after death." Those who keep the faith in the Lord Jesus Christ have this peace of mind even when they die.

There is nothing wrong with expecting a miracle from God. After all, He is the God of miracles. However, we should not expect miracles all the time. The early Christians did not always expect miracles. They died in the long run. Even those that performed miracles died as well.

Because we go through certain challenges does not mean it is the end of the world. Brother Eli takes Job as a case study. Despite his predicament, he did not lose himself to depression. He never for a single day cursed God or even thought of it, even though his wife pressured him to do so.

We can see this in the Book of Job 2:9–10.

(9) His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!”
(10) He replied, “You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

We can see that Job was seen as a man of integrity. Maintaining integrity all the time, especially in a situation like Job's, can be difficult. Job went through a very miserable experience, but despite it, he did not waver. He came to a point where he accepted whatever came his way from God, whether favorable or unfavorable.

Let's also look in the book of Job, 1:21.

and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.

What Job was trying to say in this scripture is that God is the one responsible for everything he has. And he has no objection if God decides at any point in time to take it back. In all Job went through, he still deemed it fit to render praise unto God.

Depression wasn't found in Job when going through this situation. What he actually suffered was the pain of enduring the affliction of the flesh he was going through. He considered the word of the apostles in 1 Peter 5:7.

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

When faced with anxiety, the action expected by God from us is to present it to Him. God cares so much for us that He wants to be in our affairs. He doesn't wish for us to try to handle it by ourselves because He knows it is impossible.

I believe that one major reason why people go through depression is because they refuse to turn to God for help. They make the mistake of letting God out of their affairs and dwell in isolation, which leads to frustration.

God is always ready to welcome us whenever we decide to approach Him. He's always close by; all we have to do is seek Him.
