Teniente Rey Street, Havana [EN/ES]

English Version

Once again I find myself walking through one of the streets of the Cuban capital, in one of my favourite places, the Historic Centre of Old Havana. In this post I am going to comment and show some areas of Teniente Rey street where I visited recently.

This is quite an old avenue and as I walk along it, I can see the mark that time has left on the buildings that surround it, and they are no less beautiful for being old. Teniente Rey Street is very busy as it connects two historical points of the city, which are the Convent of San Francisco de Asis and the National Capitol, this street stretches between these two places.

Like almost all the streets in Havana, it has had several names over the years. Although it is currently called Avenida Brasil, everyone still calls it Teniente Rey, which was the first name it had and by which it has always been known.

Looking at the buildings along this street, I notice that the place is being (or has been) restored, although not all of it, and this results a bit of contrasting. A newly painted and repaired building can be seen next to a rather dilapidated one. In one section of the street I feel like I am walking through colonial Havana, with its colourful façades and wooden windows and gates, and after walking a few steps I find another scene and this time it seems to me that I have advanced too far in time and that everything has aged, finding myself in a place quite deteriorated by the passing of the years.

Even so, there are many beautiful buildings that I hope will be restored, I think it is necessary as the design and beauty of the architecture of each structure deserves to be preserved and protected.

On both sides of the street there are many buildings of colonial architecture, high-strutted dwellings with overhanging balconies, facades with tall windows and wide wooden gates with metal plating. Like many streets in the historic centre, it is quite narrow and cobblestoned, which is why vehicles are not allowed on it, only pedestrians are allowed, which I like very much because I can walk with complete liberty.

In addition to residential houses, there are also more modern buildings such as cafes and restaurants, cultural centres, bodegas, pharmacies and some shops. This street is very popular with tourists who come to the city, as Teniente Rey crosses one of the largest and oldest squares in Havana, the Plaza Vieja, so it is a pleasure to walk all the way to this ancient Havana square.

This is undoubtedly another of the many avenues where the history and culture of Havana are preserved. I really enjoyed walking along it and getting to know this area, it was a new experience.

I hope you enjoyed the tour, and for those who don't know the place, you already have the reference in case you visit it someday.

Greetings to all Architecture lovers. See you next time!👋
