Family Gathering: For Bonding or an avenue for hatred and Competition?

Hello everyone, I hope I'm not too late to wish you a happy New Year. I just returned to town from the Holiday. Part of my holiday activities was family gatherings. This activity has been part of us, especially the Africans where every member of the family will have to travel home from wherever they were to have a good time together. Family is a crucial aspect of society hence it plays an important role. However, family gatherings have helped in various ways, a few of which are.

Growth and development

Family gathering brings about the growth and development of families. During this gathering, every member of the family both extended and nuclear members, share their experiences as well as challenges they're facing and if need be, help, support and solutions will be looked for. I remember two years ago in one of our family gatherings one of my cousins was given a huge amount of money to learn a skill. Family members' problems are usually taken care of during family gatherings.

Family members are made known

During family gatherings, so many family members are made known. This serves as a means of introducing new members of the family to the older ones. Especially in extended families, grandchildren happen to meet their grandparents cousins nephews and other family members. During this year's family gathering, I happened to meet with some family members for the first time and it was my father who did the explanation and introduction of who they were and who I was.

It bonds members
We cannot rule out the fact that family gatherings create bonds and love among members. When they gather, food is cooked and served and everyone eats and merriments together. This alone promotes love and oneness among the people. Eating together to a great extent promotes bonding because everyone will see themselves as brothers and sisters.

A place where fights and disagreements are settled

One of the reasons for this year's family gathering was to settle a dispute between two of my siblings. These two family members have been at loggerheads since the beginning of last year. Hence the right place to settle their disputes was during the family gathering where everyone would present their side of the story and the elders of the family would settle the matter. For me, family gatherings are the best place to settle disputes among members. This is because the aggrieved parties will have to present their issues in the presence of everyone and efforts will be put in place to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, during these family gatherings, other unethical activities happen that most times some family members are careful about whenever they gather. We cannot rule out the fact that evil exists and people are the carriers of these evil acts. Some family members are dubious and to eat with them you must use a long spoon because they are evil. During these gatherings, some family members do not walk in love towards another, especially the ones who are not well enough to do financially, oftentimes they're segregated and looked down on.

However, we cannot rule out the fact that family gatherings are a basic avenue for family growth, love and enhancement.
