Year of the Tiger 2022 - My Company's Year-End Party

In this article I talk about my year-end meal with my colleagues and some interesting customs in Vietnam.😁

2022 is the year of the Tiger according to the Chinese lunar calendar. In China, Vietnam, Korea, Singapore, Japan often have the concept of 12 zodiac animals. In China, the 12 zodiac animals include: mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, chicken, dog, pig. The 12 Vietnamese zodiac animals are different from the Chinese, we don't have ox or rabbit, we have buffalo and cat instead. Eg: 2023 is a year of the Rabbit in China but in Vietnam 2023 is a year of the cat. Everyone is born with a zodiac sign, for example, people born in the year of the horse were born in: 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026, ..There are some cultural differences between the zodiac signs in Japan and Korea, but these countries all have their own zodiac signs and definitions of the 'lunar calendar'. Vietnam zodiac animals have astrological and cultural meanings.

• People born in the year of the rat are often quick, intelligent, active, quick adaptability and good creativity.. This is also the top animal on the list
• Buffalo age: hard work, diligence, strong, but many Vietnamese people do not like to have children in the buffalo age because they believe that the buffalo age is the people who have a poor and hard life.
• Tiger's age: resourceful, smart, strong, always help others but they are short-tempered
• Cat age ; skillful, kind, emotional, wise, optimistic, have good diplomatic skills
• Dragon age: confident, enthusiastic, intelligent, arrogant .
• Snake age: doubtful, patient, enigmatic,...
• Horse age: active, intelligent, love to explore
• Goat age: gentle, kind, calm,love animals and children
• Monkey age: smart, agile, love to learn, humor
• Rooster age: hard working, loyal, gentle
• Dog age: loyal to friendship and faithful in love
• Pig age: gentle, sincere, stable, do not want to participate in competitions

In addition to personality, Vietnamese people can guess your favorite color based on your year of birth. Furthermore we can give you your lucky numbers, lucky flowers, lucky directions, or unlucky numbers, unlucky colors, unlucky directions.

An important use of the zodiac animal is to determine if two people are compatible in a relationship like : marital relationship, business relationship, friendship relationship, ..

It may be true in some cases however because these rules make it difficult for many couples to love each other but not get married. For example, there are many couples who are deeply in love, but because the zodiac signs are not compatible, they have to break up. The pairs of animals that are in conflict with each other are:
Snake age - tiger age,
Age of Rat - Age of Buffalo
Buffalo age - goat age
Age of Tiger - Age of Monkey
Cat Age - Chicken Age
Dragon Age - Dog Age
Snake age - pig age
Age of monkey - age of pig
These are just conceptions of spirituality and culture, to science it is something of a bullshit. But I find it quite true in life, with people doing business with each other, they often look at the other's age and then make a decision to cooperate or not.

The red envelope is a symbol of good luck and is a symbol to ward off evil spirits in the new year. In the first days of the new year, adults often give it to children, parents often give it to their children, or descendants give it to elderly. There is a small or large amount of money in that envelope, the giver wishes the recipient to be healthy, happy and lucky.

Year-end party with family, friends or with partners, .. that is the cultural beauty of the Vietnamese people. The year-end meal is usually held in the afternoon or evening, when people will sit next to each other to talk about memories, concerns and difficulties, grievances about each other in the old year,in the new year (in 2022) will not repeat those unhappy things. We decorated our bakery together, you can see all the decorations are red - the color of luck. We have made flower-shaped cakes, which are the flowers that Vietnamese people often use to decorate the Lunar New Year.

Some of the delicious dishes that have been cooked are: beef with wine sauce, corn sausage pizza, hamburger, vegetable salad, bacon, bread, wine,grilled chicken, grilled shrimp, spaghetti, BBQ meat. There are some dishes that we don't eat at the beginning of the new year, which are considered unlucky dishes such as duck meat, dog meat, squid, etc. I don't know why either, but it's an experience that's been around for hundreds of years LOL. We got together in the kitchen and talked about the stories of 2021 and our dreams for 2022.
