I was still lost in thought when I heard a loud crash, “crraaaang!” accompanied by Favour's scream. My mouth opened, but no sound came out. My head started spinning as I saw the shattered pieces of my globe on the tiled floor lying like flimsy ice blocks. Everything around me seemed strange and dreamy, and I desperately wished to wake up. I pinched myself repeatedly.

I walked closer, picked up a piece of the globe, and turned to Favour, asking her a question she probably didn't expect. "Are we dreaming, or is this reality?"

"I'm so sorry. I was trying to dry the globe when it slipped from my hand," she said as tears streamed down my cheeks.

The Toast Trials

From that day on, Jamal became obsessed with mastering the art of toast making himself. Every morning, he insisted on being the one to load and monitor the toaster oven. His technology-loving dad rigged up a little camera system so he could watch the browning process up close on the kitchen TV.

Some days, he drove his parents crazy summoning them for constant toast inspections. "Mom! Dad! Come look ,is THIS the perfect level of crunchy yet??"

Other days, the smoke alarms would go off as Jamal misjudged the appropriate shade of "golden delicious" browning. But he was determined to get it right through trial and error.

Because of other work errands, I spent a week without going to visit Adriana and that was already a long time for me. Strangely, when I returned, no one answered me. The house seemed to be alone. I remember that I waited for about twenty minutes in front of her house because I deduced that maybe she was coming home late from work. I did this for a whole week, returning every day in the afternoon at the same time, but the result was the same. I don't know how much time passed, but it was several months in which my thoughts were tangled with many ideas. "Maybe she went back to her old house, or moved somewhere else." That was what I thought about most as I reproached myself for the mistake of not even taking her phone number.

“Sofie, Sofie!” she heard Dr. Meyer say

“I’m sorry, did you say something?” She asked him.

“I said you shouldn't be on your own now, is there anybody I could call to come pick you up?” he asked

Alice chuckled dryly as the thought of leaving her loved ones behind hit home. Her friends, Zoe and Elsa her besties, her parents, Elliot her love. She broke down in tears while Dr. Meyer comforted her. Eventually, she convinced him she could get home on her own and left the hospital.

To hope.

"Well, sh*t happens. Care for a toast?" I asked.

"Ah ha, why not?" Greg replied, raising his glass cup. "To a future without heartbreak.". He said. We both burst out laughing. I wish it were as easy as he said.

"To a life with fewer hurts." I said as we both made a toast with our glasses. Greg became more relaxed, even though his face had sadness written all over it. Greg revealed to me how he showered unconditional love on his supposed fiance, Tracy, only to be shocked by her refusal to marry him. He spoke for well over fifty minutes, and rather than interrupt him, I listened to him. As much as I wanted to point out some red flags he should have taken note of, I knew better than to trade blame.

"That smells good," Nathan said to Helen who wasn't aware of his presence.

"Good morning, sir. I can make some for you too," Helen replied.

"Thanks but I prefer toast bread, I am so addicted to it. Please let it be nice," Nathan replied.

"Okay sir, it will be ready in a few minutes. Where should I bring it," She asked.

"Just call my office line, and I will pick it up. Thanks," Nathan replied.

He laughed. It was a beautiful deep laugh.

She knew it was all a carefully crafted act on his part, but there was an aura of fiery mystery about him that drew her like a magnet.

“You, my lady, are mischief incarnate,” he said. “I’ve been warned about terrestrial girls and their wily ways.”

“Don’t tell me you’re Mars exclusive.”
