Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #95

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last month's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Winner

@wongi wins 20 Hive for the month of July.

Featuring @wongi, with the story:

Dark And Lonely

Anthony was one of my good friends. A very vibrant and easygoing young man. He wasn't the type to go searching for trouble and so when he narrated to my roommate and I how he almost got robbed, I got a bit emotional.

Curator's comment :

Wongi delivers a lighthearted look at the dark subject of highway robbery. Great dialogue drives this tongue-in-cheek piece making it a pleasure to read.

Highlighting @amarachi22, with the story:

A CALL TO REALITY

I couldn't help the tears that came as I thought of how good and loving John's parents were to me back then whenever I came to visit him. The warm welcome I always received left me feeling fuzzy. They treated me as if I was their own. It's so unfair how bad things happen to good people.

Curator's comment :

@amarachi22 writes a very sensitive story for the wake-up call prompt. She tells how the death of a friend's parents made her realize that she shouldn't take her own parents' presence for granted. With sufficiently efficient writing, the author keeps us interested throughout the read.

Featured

Highlighting @princessbusayo, with the story:

Reflections and Realizations

While I was taken to live with my aunt in another city, the only solution I kept receiving was to resit another exam and not only that, I had to be a student in a school to get registered with them for the examination. I felt ashamed of myself as I realized I would have to enroll in another secondary school when I had already graduated.

Curator's comment :

Princessbusayo writes a heartfelt, brutally honest and extremely charming CNF.

This Week's Prompt 95:

Where there's smoke there's fire

Collins dictionary:

If someone says where there's smoke there's fire, they mean that there are rumors or signs that something is true so it must be at least partly true.

  • Perhaps a number of subtle clues eventually led you to discover a betrayal.
  • Maybe your sixth sense alerted you to take note of the little facts that allowed you to escape from a dangerous situation unharmed.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
