Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #62

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Where Did The Light Come From?

One day—his birthday—he told our grandmother that he had to work across a river at a relative’s farm. When my father and Uncle Jun heard that, they stopped him, saying it might be dangerous for him. One of the superstitious beliefs in the Philippines was that those celebrating their birthday, or those whose birth date was just around the corner, were prone to danger; therefore, they must stay home and not go anywhere.

Curator's comment :

The CNF is beautifully written in a perfectly eerie and otherworldly tone. Masterfully done!

Light at the end of this tunnel

So, I started my path to getting a job. I had a mobile phone, so the first thing I did was to go online. I had heard about Upwork and fiverr from a lot of people. I opened accounts on both platforms and didn't stop there. I signed up for almost anything that had to do with writing. Writing had always been something I loved doing since I could hold a pen. It was an escape in its own way.

Curator's comment :

Loveah writes a hard-hitting, relatable CNF about being scammed with a job offer that "wasn't". Interesting, engaging writing that glitters talent in a shiny manner!

Featured

Highlighting @osomar357, with the story:

A light for the community

Ruben, another neighbor who saw the situation, when he saw Roberto said, — That's why I will never be in the condo, people here are very rude, and they mistreat a lot of the people who are on the Condo Board working for the community. In addition, if Angela saw her phone, she would have seen the message from Mrs. Clara from the condominium group that there is no water entrance from the street and that the water is going to be turned on from 8 to 10 at night.

Curator's comment :

He writes a really quite wonderful CNF about the first big power outage in Caracas at the beginning of this period of hell in Venezuela.
