Vitalik Butterin: There are years left until Ethereum is scaled up at the base level.

Vitaly Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, reminded that the second largest in the foreseeable future will not receive effective improvements in the context of scale-up at block level. On the research portal, he laid out a "roll-up-oriented road map" where he outlined his vision of the situation.

"Scalability at the basic level for applications will only come with the last major phase of Ethereum 2.0, which is still years away," he writes.

Instead, Buterin proposes to focus on scaling solutions for level 2. According to him, "Level 2 protocols should be built into wallets," like Metamask. To date, such solutions have not gained significant distribution among users.

He also encourages the development of asset transfer tools between different tier 2 solutions. According to skeptics, it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to do so.

According to Trustnodes, a closed meeting of Ethereum developers was held in 2019 to present a real roadmap for the upcoming update. The participants expressed bewilderment due to the long lead times until the announced benefits were achieved.

"I think it is important to understand that, at least in the short term, we have no other choice. The first level is almost unsuitable for many application classes. There is no way around second-tier solutions that would lead us to scalability in the short and medium term," added Buterin.
