A Compromise: Working To Live Or Living To Work?

I remember when I was 20, I celebrated getting my first salary raise by going out with some of my colleagues at work and treating them to a decent meal.

I spent a sizeable chunk of that salary raise thereby unsettling my budget and putting the "end-of-the-month" debts I had to pay. but I didn't mind. The reason was that those people were the reason why I didn't quit the job when it was threatening my physical and mental health.

They created an avenue where we easily shared work responsibilities, so instead of a person solely carrying the weight of their job responsibilities.

we collectively shared each individual's responsibilities and it became more of a fun job, more than an actual job. We found ways to earn more money for ourselves and the job that could potentially become hell for me, was like doing what I enjoyed.

Our level of efficiency got better, I improved at what I offered. In reality, it wasn't my effort alone, and after I got that salary raise, I realized that people are the true wealth we must embody if we're ever going to have the opportunity to own materialistic wealth.

Working is one aspect of life that we tend to dislike because of factors like the hostility of the environment, the workload, and the stress that comes with it

In Nigeria for example, it's difficult to find jobs where the goals of the people are aligned, some people make friends and acquaintance hoping to get promotions or salary raise through these avenues.

Their motives are purely materialistic which creates this "do or die" circumstance, where they can betray their colleagues, and sell them short, just to achieve their aim.

People want to serve money

.......thereby killing the genuinety that comes with work and the fulfillment that should be derived from it. When I first joined that workspace, I aimed to make some cash to take care of my needs.

What I didn't realize was that, setting out alone to make money can be difficult. There were scopes to making money. The rigidity of hard work, or the endless chase that comes with it cannot guarantee the result I sought.

Mannerism is very important.

Rigidly approaching the subject of money can lead to unproductiveness, sometimes we have to consider our strengths and know what our limits and weaknesses are, and this might help us in truly achieving the best ways to find work fulfillment.

Without fulfillment, a job is just a job.

A place where we turn up simply because we have bills that are piled up. However, treating a job as a job, makes it difficult for us to grow.

One might be growing the company where they work, improving their sales, and bringing in huge numbers, but they're only doing this because they're scared of not meeting targets, or scared of losing that job.

Mentally, they're not growing themselves, improving their network, or creating powerful interpersonal relationships off the job.

Sometimes, people treat their means of income, as a money-making venture

......this is why they often break down from mental exhaustion, because of the work loop they've inadvertently created for themselves.

In my case, I knew I already hated the job because of its hectic nature when I joined, the responsibilities and goals I needed to achieve were only paramount.

I never considered the extracurricular benefits I could achieve, I never even wondered if I could withstand the stress of the job.

"What if I couldn't?" Do I give up, go home, cry, or wallow in self-pity? All these were the things I never considered.

I am however grateful for the people I met there, the orientation I got is why I treasure potential relationships with people whom I tend to establish businesses with.

The People You Should Value

This is why it's important to be affiliated with people who are after your well-being even when your relationship should be strictly business. People who are concerned about having you at your 100% before the money and the job.

Business relationship that places people above the money and the job are the most efficient. People who want to know why you failed to meet up target rather than focusing on the money you lost because of the target you couldn't meet up with.

The secret is that anywhere money is to be made, try to stay in places where people are concerned about how you can collectively grow with them, rather than what they individually get from you.

the slaves of materialism are the worst. a lot depends on the social bubble. Fortunately, I have the independence to work as a craftsman. So I don't have to talk to anyone. how I do it, I have it like this. Working with people is hell for me. I'm used to working alone.

unfortunately, I don't have a personal life, so I'm very busy right now.

Working with the right people is the best way to approach the responsibilities, burden or challenge of working. While there's nothing wrong with being a craftsman like you are. It's also very beautiful to collectively work with the right people.

Good People Relations Really Matters in your Work or Business for Growth,
When a work environment is toxic, both Individuals and the Company won't grow.
I have had experience of working in an organisation that I later resigned because of the toxic nature of the environment, the staffs there are not friendly
And I also have worked in a school organisation in which everyone was like a big family, definitely the school was ever progressing.

Well said, well summarized. I feel, it's not just about the toxicity of the job. Sometimes, it's about how the other workers can boost your productivity, how their energy and attempt at creating a united front can establish an environment where it's going to be difficult for anyone to actually fail.
I'm still friends and go on to establish even bigger business relationships with people I worked with over 10 years ago. Sometimes, chasing the money makes people lose the most essential things.

Once people get over themselves being important in any situation, life becomes easier tackling problems together. Sharing knowledge lifts all to greater heights it is the selfish attitude of many to cling onto what they have.

You're correct. Collectively choosing to deal with life's issues in general, reduces individual responsibilities and burden. I have come to understand that when you're working with the right people, the burden is reduced and people tend to achieve fufillment.

We all need each other to move forward.

It sucks but the job pays the bills and I agree with the motivation aspect. If you do something you love, then there isn't any issues. It reminds me of the people who did Youtube as a hobby had fun but eventually, they ran into issues when they burned out. They considered that as a job and they just didn't have as much fun.

The fun, the purpose is important. Sometimes as humans, we understand that money is important, but if we don't attach the sentiment or emotional fufillment from working, it'll be very difficult to actually find joy with what we're doing.

However, treating a job as a job, makes it difficult for us to grow

Hehehhehhe this has a nice ring to it, I guess we need to start treating our jobs like our babies🥰🥰 Anyways I'm currently with my baby😄😄

Not as babies per se. Finding fufillment, establishing off-job relationships with people who could essentially raise you up and finding ways for that particular job to enrich, grow or develop you, other then the monthly income that's inevitable.

Ohhh I see, makes alot of sense now.

Thanks for explaining better😃

Great speech, the issues of money has been one of the basic and the key point of our existence as a person, when growing up we have all those dream I will buy a plane for mum and dad build houses and others luxuries of life.
Coming to adulthood the whole orientation changes, first they are bills and needs to attend to. And life has structure itself to work on our psychology i.e if you don't work you can eat which is true and we started leaving and work bases on need solving and bills payment, and we hardly live the life we initially wanted.
We are supposed to live to work, but is the other way round we work to live.

I guess i have also being in a similar situation before.
The work i actually did was life draining due to the 24hrs protocol involved. I never had closed working partners since i was the youngest in the company, but guess what, the position i handled was the main eye of the company, where i made more sales for the company than other position.Great post @josediccus.

Though, the benefits where interesting, but i really had a tough time in terms of mental health.

Sometimes, i will always wish that i had known hive as at that time. Channeling all my savings then would have gone a long way😢. But it's never late ever🙌.

People who want to know why you failed to meet up target rather than focusing on the money you lost because of the target you couldn't meet up with.

This is one of the ways to know those who really care about you. They will be willing to join hands with you and find out those areas you failed rather than, blaming you for the fortune you lost.

Working in an environment with helpful and friendly people would enhance more productivity to the organisation, cause two heads are better than one.

Talking about yourself, your mental health would be intact. You will have your peace of mind and be willing to contribute more to the growth of the company.
You did the right thing by showing gratitude to your colleagues who supported and encouraged you all through the journey.

Hmm you are right
I guess most youths of nowadays tend to value people who are not adding anything good to their lives or even people who only want you to spend recklessly and things like that...
This is why I now value my colleagues more because we work together and make better plans on how to spend our money

I think one of the things a lot of people still lack is good human management skills. Most of the time I believe our society trains us to live to work instead of the way round

Some people are good in this life just because they offer more than money; they offer things that you can't buy in the market. It is good to have good relationships with people. this is one of those things that give us fulfillment and trust me, you are a wonderful person too. I'm thrilled that I know you

It is a fact that the kind of people a person lives with, if they are good and supportive, it becomes easier for a person to live and when a person starts a business, people are supportive by staying with them. If we work hard, we can also do business in a good way, only the servants who are should be good with people.

So this means that the best place to work is where they are more concerned about your growth and mindset than your output. This is true, I believe if people work because they love the job, the workflow, and it is not detrimental to their health, the business as a whole would do just fine.

This is why it's important to be affiliated with people who are after your well-being even when your relationship should be strictly business. People who are concerned about having you at your 100% before the money and the job.

This is really important, having such people by your side is a blessing.
