I have a friend who has been in a certain business for the past 14 years. He built around this business for a long time and understood everything about it, but last year the government changed policies which affected his business and he was not able to operate it properly, it got to the point where he realized that he had to move into another business and see what Life has installed for him but when he was trying to decide to try another business, he was confused that what he is he going to do now. It looks as if everything is against him, and he finds it difficult to find his identity because he has been in his previous business for so long that he doesn’t believe anything could happen, now he struggles with identity change.

People find it difficult to identify who they are when they stick their identity with one single thing, and this happens in almost every industry where you might find yourself, if you have been around that industry for so long without being flexible it becomes a problem later in the future. A perfect example is someone who has been dancing all their life and the older they get the slower they become and find it difficult to continue dancing, when it is time to change into another thing, they struggle with their identity because they have to build their identity with dancing all their life to go into another thing may seem difficult or seems impossible. This is the downside that creating a habit might have on you.

Habit downside

It is good to create a habit, especially into things that we love to do or into things that we are good at. Sometimes you can create a habit in our business or our profession, but when we stick to one habit for so
Long it becomes difficult to improve, When we build our identity around just a habit we will find it difficult to change. We might later struggle with identity when we lose the habit, maybe because of age or circumstances. People who built around a habit for a long time find themselves in situations where they ask what are they going to do now because they have built around just one habit and when it’s time for a change, they can’t see beyond the habit.

People who build their identity around a habit may find it difficult to make corrections, They also struggle with changes in their habit whether to improve or to change later in the future. The truth is that life is not stagnant and what is relevant today may not be relevant tomorrow, people who build a habit around their identity always struggle with sudden change because they don’t always know what to do next. Things are changing and industries are evolving, there is nothing bad in building habits, but you must be flexible with it and always review the habits that are still working for you.

Be flexible

You must constantly check your old habits and your old beliefs, whether they are still working for you or not, you must always review your habits and be flexible with them. Sticking with old beliefs, or a habit can have a downside, we must seek opportunities and things that could make us better because enjoying so many benefits from a habit doesn’t mean we shouldn’t look elsewhere, we must constantly review our habits and be able to accept change.

Thanks for your time.
