Most people believe that all you need is to create a habit and everything else follows, but this is not true without putting some things in place. The truth is, when you create a habit, you are only trying to automate something without thinking about it. You’re also trying to make it part of your life and in the process, you might be better than 70% of the population, but this will not automatically mean that you have mastered what you’re trying to do or you have perfected the habit and generally speaking when people create a habit they believe that’s all they need to consider and nothing else without trying to make it better.
When you’ve been doing the same thing for a long time, it gets to a point where your performance will drop and this is because we are all humans, we might believe in our heads that we are getting better, but all we are doing is repeating the same thing every day. When we do this for a long period our performance drops, we might think we are getting better but in reality, we are only getting worse and this is because we are not giving room for mistakes, we believe doing it often makes us better but it only gives us the ability to repeat it without thinking and to automate but this doesn’t make us master it or improve over time.
You not improving
A good example I can use is the gym, you can build the habit of going to the gym but you may not see an improvement. This is because the habit alone does not work. You might get a little bit stronger and build some muscle, but you might still struggle with a lot of fat in your body, and apart from that your overall result might not be something that you want. Doing it often doesn’t make you master it what gives you an edge over another person who is creating a habit is deliberate practice and this is what leads to true mastery even though we cannot completely ignore a habit because it is the first step you must make, it you must automate without thinking about it and you also need deliberate practice.
Deliberate practice is good because it makes you aware that creating a habit alone might not be the solution. You need other factors in place when you create a habit and you can improve only if you’re deliberate about it. Deliberate practice will make you realize that there is always room for improvement, and this will create challenges for you, when you work on these challenges and you automate them you are going to get better. Deliberate practice makes you better than the average person because you’re not just creating a habit but deliberate about improving the habits you create and also giving yourself a better chance to be the best.
