Crypto, Wishful Thinking and Indifference

in LeoFinance11 days ago

Much as we might like to think otherwise, the vast majority of people in the world are indifferent towards most things they encounter.

That general indifference tends to run counter to the hopes and dreams of the innovators of the world.

How so?

It's less about enthusiasm and early vs. late adopters than it's about the simple reality that loads of people might openly think that something you have to offer is a "great idea" but that doesn't mean they are actually going to take action on your allegedly great idea.

Believing that they will is essentially not much more than "wishful thinking."

In a sense, we need look no further than the world of politics. I would submit that a substantial reason why we have so much extremism and people keep saying that those extremes "don't really represent the general population" is that the middle tends to be very indifferent, and it's very difficult to motivate them to take action.

We think they are "with us" because they say we have something cool, but they don't actually care enough to act on that.

They'd rather just have barbecues and mow their lawns.

Tried to get anyone to join the Hive community, lately?

I bring crypto into this picture because the entire industry is riddled with wishful thinking.

We talk about "Bitcoin Dominance," but let's extend it a bit.

As I write these words the aggregate market cap of the Cryptosphere is $2,670,000,000,000 according to CMC. The market cap of the ten largest cryptos adds up to $2,417,083,000,000. That means that the tens of thousands of tokens/projects outside the top 10 amount to just 9 1/2% of the total value.

And every single one of those tens of thousands operate under the illusion that they are going to be "the greatest thing ever."

For comparison's sake, the total market cap of the US stock market is about $62.2 trillion, with the top 10 market caps accounting for $18.97 trillion... or about 30% of the total.

Irrelevant side note: There was a time when Hive (well, our legacy chain's token) was a top five currency! Did you know that?

The more I think about it... after more than a decade of being part of this whole crypto circus... the more it seems like crypto's "problem" — maybe even "the elephant in the room" — is that this whole gig's self-image is/has become that it is "supposed to be" easy money, where people get rich without much of a plan or effort.

The hype of wishful thinking just doesn't seem to "get legs," in the long run... it just fills a few people's pockets and leaves everyone else with nothing but a bad taste in their mouths.

I suppose I felt motivated to write these words because I inceasingly struggle to feel enthusiastic about the whole crypto scene. I've always felt put off by the focus on instant crypto Lambos, rather than building something truly game changing for the long run and the general betterment of the world.

We can draw parallels to the "dot-com bubble" to our heart's content... but can crypto really do much about its "image problem" as a quagmire of "easy money crypto bros" running after the next dodgy proposition that flies to the moon for three days and then vanishes into obscurity?

Mass adoption?

I don't think so. That previously mentioned "indifferent middle majority" will never get out of their Barcaloungers to chase that clown show.

There's an old truism that when you find yourself stuck at the bottom of a deep hole, the first thing you need to do is STOP DIGGING!

Which means shifting our own paradigm from chasing gossamer dreams in Web 3.0 Fantasy Land and building something that everyday people will actually use because they can look directly at it and see that it is substantially easier and better than what they currently have.

Build something REAL!

More real than "Look! We'll pay you a reward in this obscure token with zero liquidity for sending your crypto through these 43 exchanges to get from point A to point B by only installing four wallets and downloading 7 apps!"

Because pretty much nobody actually cares, outside a small group of rabid Crypto Bros. Make it as easy and inclusive to use as PayPal and check back with me... because I don't care how clever you are, just whether your "gimmick" is actually functional and easy to use. And in working order!

Thanks for coming to visit, and do leave a comment if you feel so inclined!

most people are indeed indifferent, and our so-called 'great ideas' don't automatically translate to action. We need to focus on building something truly game-changing, not just chasing easy money.
