Greetings my dear community of cinephiles who love the best of film and television, greetings from your friend @lavilorio super excited to come to tell you about a great movie to which I would give 5 stars, but for some reasons that I do not know because I am not an expert in cinema there are divided opinions in the criticism, let's say a 60 - 40 in favor of those who liked absolutely everything
This movie is not new, it is from 2021 and I saw it on the recommendation of my husband who only told me the name of the director and showed me the official post and I sat down with him to watch it and in the early morning I sat down again to watch it with great detail so that absolutely nothing escaped me and so I could add some curiosities that I saw in the film that I had to investigate that morning and of course some comments from the director, without further ado I give you the name of the genius who wrote the script, produced and directed, none other than ta, ta, ta, ta M. Night Shyamalan.
If you don't know who he is, you will know from the following films:
-El sexto sentido con Bruce Willis 1999 (Un peliculazo) -El protegido con Bruce Willis y Samuel L. Jackson del 2000 -Fragmentado con James McAvoy 2016 -Glass con los actores mencionados anteriormente 2019 -Y por lo que estamos hoy aquí: Viejos con Gael García Bernal 2021
-The Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis 1999 (A hell of a movie). -The Protected with Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson 2000 -Fragmented with James McAvoy 2016 -Glass with the actors mentioned above 2019 -And what we're here for today: Old with Gael García Bernal 2021
When I heard about this reference I didn't hesitate to see it, but what killed me with curiosity was the post, the design really told me a lot about what was going to happen in the story.
Old tells the story of a family of 4 formed by a married couple with two children who go to a tropical paradise to spend a delightful vacation without knowing that they would be traveling towards their old age.
I'll start by saying that the story is not original to the screenwriter, producer and director, but we'll get into that later.
As I have said in other opportunities, I love intrigue films and this one had a bit of that linked with terror and suspense that was exquisitely accompanied by the sequence shots used by the director in certain moments that with the sound effects definitely created tension in the viewer.
As in any suspense story there was a conflict between the protagonists of the story Guy Cappa (Gael García Bernal) and Prisca Cappa (Vicky Krieps) who had problems in their marriage and were about to separate, in addition to a secret that she was keeping and finally ends up revealing. They traveled with their two sons Maddox and Trent who were played by 4 actors in their different stages of life.
Among the cast was another family of 4, the couple of Charles (Ruffus Sewell) and Crystal (Abbey Lee Kershaw) who traveled with Charles' mother Agnes (Kathleen Chalfant) and their 6-year-old daughter Kara who was played by 3 actresses.
They were also joined by other visitors: Mid- Sized (Aaron Pierre) and the couple formed by Jarin (Ken Leung) and Patricia (Nikki Amuka-Bird).
All frightened, disoriented because shortly after arriving at the beach they find a young girl dead on the beach, at the same time the mother of Cahrles for her advanced age gives her last breath and at the same time they see the sudden growth of the children who went from being 6 and 11 years old to become teenagers of 11 and 16 years old approximately, all in a matter of a few hours and when they decide to leave they realize that there is no possible way out.
This series of events brings conflicts between the tourists, especially with Charle for being a psychiatric patient who as he ages his features become more accentuated bringing some good scenes that leave the viewer glued to the film.
I don't want to spoil the ending, I can only recommend that you go to Pprime video platform, which may not be one of the streaming platforms that everyone buys, but it really has some very good stuff.
As a reflection it leaves us that time is worthless, we do not know how long we will be on earth and it is ridiculous to spend it in vanity, in fights, in grudges, because when we realize that we have little time left to reach the end of the road, we treasure the moments we lost in quarrels with our loved ones and there will be nothing we can do, we must take advantage of today and now to cultivate it in our family, children, partner, parents, siblings and then not regret what could have been and was not.
Personally I would like to comment that there was a scene in which Prisca sees her son who suddenly grew up, she looked at him with amazement and I would say sadness, fear and some longing because hours before he was a child, that scene touched my heart because it made me remember myself as a mother, I have two children, one 18 years old and my daughter 7 years old; When my son began to do things on his own, it was so fast for me to see him become an adult and I really couldn't assimilate it, for me that transition was very painful because my son is a very detached man, not only with me, but also with everyone at home, When I realized that he is no longer a child, my memories came to my mind of when he was 6 years old and I came home from work, he would run to the gate with great joy to greet me, hug me and kiss me and for me it was so normal that I feel that I did not value it enough and now how I miss those eyes of joy when they saw me. Well, this has taught me to enjoy the stages of my children a little more, I have a little girl that when she sees me runs to hug me and I have an adult son that makes me proud to see him grow and achieve the things he sets out to do, that's what life is all about and this movie reminded me of that again.
And to make this post different from the ones I've been doing I want to give you 8 curiosities that will make you watch the movie if you haven't enjoyed it yet, Beware because they CONTAIN SPOILER, here they go:
1- The film was inspired by the graphic novel Sand Castle, by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters.2- The film's director, M. Night Shyamalan, appears in the film as the chauffeur who drives the characters to the beach.
3- The book that Prisca Cappa reads in the movie when she asks her husband if he knows what book she is reading is dangerous liaison by Carole Seymour-Jones and is about the literary rivalry and love affair between Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. Throughout the film Prisca and Guy talk about an infidelity in marriage.
4- The grandmother of the group (Agnes) lived 5 years longer than the beach time was 2 and a half hours.
5- The Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson movie that Charles mentions when he is operating on Prisca and then asks about on other occasions is Duel of Giants and the director included it because it reminded him of his father who suffered some kind of dementia like the doctor in the movie.
6- Trent and Kara's baby dies within seconds of birth from starvation because a newborn baby eats on average every two hours and if half an hour equals a year of life, 1 minute equals approximately 1.6 weeks.
7- Chrystal develops chronic osteoporosis as at the beginning of the film she orders a calcium shake and mentions to the waiter that she suffers from a calcium deficiency. Beyond her vanity she tells her 6 year old daughter to watch her posture because a hump is terrible, sadly she has that terrifying fate.
8- The beach chosen for the film is located in Latin America, specifically in the Dominican Republic.
And that's all for today, I really recommend the movie, it is not suitable for children under 13 years old, so wait for the kids to go to bed to enjoy it completely, I send you a hug wishing you a happy and productive day.
