Hace unos días un amigo me comentó que en lo que va de año se había visto una película al día. Antes de tener un horario laboral tan estricto recuerdo que hacía ese tipo de cosas, pero ahora, ¿cómo lo haces? Le pregunté, a lo que me dijo: nunca veo películas que duren más de cien minutos. La gente a veces llega a creer que una película corta no puede contar una buena historia, pero la verdad es que mientras más purgada sea la película es mejor apreciarla. Sin caer en malinterpretaciones, las últimas dos películas de Scorsese duran casi las cuatro horas y son increíbles, pero es porque cada plano es necesario para la historia. Cuándo los directores entienden que es necesario y que no para contar su historia, a veces sale una película larga, a veces una muy larga y otras veces incluso, una serie. Pero ahora, quiero hablar de algunas películas cortas que son, para mí, un 10/10:

A few days ago a friend told me that so far this year he had watched one movie a day. Before I had such a strict work schedule I remember doing that kind of thing, but now, how do you do it? I asked him, to which he said: I never watch movies that last more than a hundred minutes. People sometimes come to believe that a short film can't tell a good story, but the truth is that the more purified the film, the better it is to appreciate it. Without being misunderstood, Scorsese's last two films are almost four hours long and they are incredible, but that's because every shot is necessary for the story. When directors understand what is and isn't necessary to tell their story, sometimes it's a long movie, sometimes a very long movie and sometimes even a series. But now, I want to talk about some short films that are, for me, a 10/10:
Fargo
Una de las mejores películas de los hermanos Coen narra una historia real sobre el secuestro de una mujer, secuestro que fue planeado por su marido para reclamar el dinero y volverse rico. Esta película fue una de las que catapultaron a los Coen a la fama y es completamente entendible ya que es divertidísima de principio a fin. Con un humor muy característico de los directores y unos personajes sumamente extraños, la película al final (y me disculpan lo que puedan considerar esto spoiler) no llega a nada, pero todo lo que pasa para llegar a esa “nada” es algo realmente interesante de ver.
Fargo
One of the Coen brothers' best films tells a true story about the kidnapping of a woman, a kidnapping that was planned by her husband to reclaim the money and become rich. This film was one of the films that catapulted the Coens to fame and it is completely understandable since it is hilarious from beginning to end. With a very characteristic humor of the directors and some very strange characters, the film in the end (and excuse me if you consider this a spoiler) comes to nothing, but everything that happens to get to that "nothing" is really interesting to watch.
Punch Drunk Love
Si alguno cree que Adam Sandler no sabe actuar, no ha visto Punch Drunk Love (y simplemente no ha visto sus películas). De la mano de uno de mis directores favoritos, Paul Thomas Anderson, Punch Drunk Love nos cuenta la historia de Barry, una persona depresiva dueña de un negocio pequeño que encuentra al amor de su vida, pero para obtenerlo, tendrá que pasar un malentendido con una pandilla. De mis confort movies y cuándo la vean podrían entender el porqué, Punch Dunk Love es una película que te abraza fuerte pero que también se puede reír contigo dependiendo de tu ánimo; lo muy cierto es que se quedará contigo de una u otra forma.
Punch Drunk Love
if you think Adam Sandler can't act, you haven't seen Punch Drunk Love (and you simply haven't seen his movies). From one of my favorite directors, Paul Thomas Anderson, Punch Drunk Love tells the story of Barry, a depressed small business owner who finds the love of his life, but to get it, he will have to go through a misunderstanding with a gang. One of my comfort movies and when you see it you might understand why, Punch Dunk Love is a movie that hugs you tight but can also laugh with you depending on your mood; what is very certain is that it will stay with you in one way or another.
Crash
Una película erótica de culto dirigida por el genio del body horror David Cronenberg, ¿Qué más se puede pedir? Tras haber pasado su “etapa” de body horror, Cronenberg quiso adentrarse más en otro tipo de horror, mostrando el lado más turbio de la psique de sus personajes, y en Crash, una película sobre un grupo de personas que tienen cierta parafilia con los choques automovilísticos, creo que logro su mejor película. Decir esto es difícil ya que tiene películas de la talla de La Mosca, Videodrome o la más reciente Crime of the Future, pero más allá de su buenísima filmografía, Cronenberg en Crash tiene una dirección sensual y soberbia que nunca logró volver a replicar, con una historia tan inquietante cómo hipnótica que hace de esta película una pasada de ver.
Crash
An erotic cult film directed by body horror genius David Cronenberg, what more could you ask for? Having passed his body horror "stage", Cronenberg wanted to delve deeper into another kind of horror, showing the murkier side of his characters' psyches, and in Crash, a film about a group of people who have a certain paraphilia with car crashes, I think he achieved his best film. This is difficult to say since he has films like The Fly, Videodrome or the most recent Crime of the Future, but beyond his great filmography, Cronenberg in Crash has a sensual and superb direction that he never managed to replicate again, with a story as disturbing as hypnotic that makes this film a must see.
