I hope you're all doing great, I had the chance to watch Monkey Man over the weekend and I'm still coming to terms with what I found... this isn't just another action movie, no, no, this is a trip, a good one, that mixes street fights in very dark places with a crazy homage to ancient mythology, the movie throws you headlong into the super murky and hectic world of Bombay (well, an invented and very stylish version of the city), where the main character, who is called Kid, sets out to seek revenge in a brutal way... in each scene, Monkey Man takes you to a world where the violence is brutal, without anesthesia, but at the same time has a super deep cultural symbolism.

Seriously, it's one of the most exciting movies I've seen lately... it caught me from the beginning... Kid is a young guy, but he carries a lot of pain, marked by the destruction of his town and the super sad death of his mother, he gets into fighting in clandestine fights, wearing a monkey mask that attracts attention... watch out, that mask is not just to look cool, it's a nod to the Hindu god Hanuman, who is a symbol of devotion, strength and total dedication. While watching Kid, I couldn't stop thinking about the unstoppable wave of Hanuman and how an ordinary guy becomes a modern vigilante by taking those ancient values.

The film handles the adrenaline of the action incredibly with emotional moments, that make you laugh, leave you with your mouth open and even make you think a lot throughout the story, something that blew my mind was how Monkey Man dares to touch on complicated issues. Yes, there are action scenes that remind you of John Wick, Kill Bill and even the classic Bruce Lee movies, but this movie goes far beyond kicks and stunts, it gets right into problems that we see every day: religious division, fanaticism, corruption in the government and discrimination against minority groups, including the Hijra community, which many times no one takes into account. It feels like an invitation to think about the world we live in, like a wake-up call against those forces that want to divide society. When I finish it, not only will I be able to see the world in which we live, but I will also be able to see the world in which we live. I came away entertained, but also more aware of the social and political problems that affect us all. Who would have thought that an action movie would leave you thinking so much, eh?

Espero que se encuentren súper bien, el fin de semana tuve la oportunidad de ver Monkey Man y todavía estoy asimilando con lo que me encontré.. esta no es una pelicula de acción más del montón, no, no, esto es un viaje, pero de los buenos, que te mezcla peleas callejeras en lugares oscurísimos con un homenaje loco a la mitología antigua, la peli te mete de cabeza en el mundo super turbio y agitado de Bombay (bueno, una versión inventada y con mucho estilo de la ciudad), donde el prota, al que le dicen Kid, se lanza a buscar venganza a lo bestia.. en cada escena, Monkey Man te lleva a un mundo donde la violencia es brutal, sin anestesia, pero a la vez tiene un simbolismo cultural súper profundo.

De verdad, es de las peliculas más emocionantes que he visto últimamente.. me atrapó desde el principio.. Kid es un tipo joven, pero que carga un dolor muy grande, marcado por la destrucción de su pueblo y la muerte super triste de su madre, se mete a pelear en luchas clandestinas, usando una máscara de mono que llama la atención.. ojo, esa máscara no es solo para verse cool, es un guiño al dios hindú Hanuman, que es un símbolo de devoción, fuerza y entrega total. Mientras veía a Kid, no podía dejar de pensar en la onda imparable de Hanuman y cómo un tipo común y corriente se convierte en un justiciero moderno al tomar esos valores antiguos..

La película maneja increíble la adrenalina de la acción con momentos emotivos, que te hacen reír, te dejan con la boca abierta y hasta te ponen a pensar un montón durante toda la historia, algo que me voló la cabeza fue cómo Monkey Man se anima a tocar temas complicados.. si, hay escenas de acción que te recuerdan a John Wick, Kill Bill y hasta las pelis clásicas de Bruce Lee, pero esta peli va mucho más allá de las patadas y las acrobacias, se mete de lleno con problemas que vemos todos los días: la división religiosa, el fanatismo, la corrupción en el gobierno y la discriminación contra grupos minoritarios, incluyendo a la comunidad Hijra, que muchas veces nadie los toma en cuenta.. se siente como una invitación a que pensemos en el mundo en el que vivimos, como un llamado de atención contra esas fuerzas que quieren dividir a la sociedad.. cuando la termine, no solo salí entretenido, sino también como más despierto sobre los problemas sociales y políticos que nos tocan a todos. ¿Quién diría que una peli de acción te iba a dejar pensando tanto, eh?

But hey, let's talk about the action, folks... the fight scenes are on another level, the camera moves so precisely, it puts you right in the middle of every punch, every kick, you feel like you're right there in the middle of the problem! Have you ever seen a fist fight in an elevator or in a hallway so tight that it seems like the camera is also grappling with each other? Monkey Man does it, but in a brutal way... intense, vibrant shots that leave your heart beating a thousand miles an hour, it reminded me a bit of the action in Daredevil.

But here the violence is not just for the sake of it... it is crude, yes, but at the same time it has a choreography that is beautiful, even if it sounds strange, each fight reminds you, right to your face, what is at stake and the fury that Kid brings to get revenge... I swear that more than once I found myself perplexed, but what makes Monkey Man much more than a simple action movie is that it has heart, it has feeling, obviously, not everything was rosy for Dev Patel, who apart from directing, stars in the film, he faced a lot of problems during filming. I read somewhere that he broke his hand, that they worked with a budget that was nothing and that they even had technical problems with the cameras, but you know what? Instead of ruining it, these problems give the film an authentic, unique vibe... you can feel the sweat, the passion in every scene, as if the difficulties themselves were part of the story... it's a sign of Patel's creativity and perseverance, who picked up every stone in the road and used it to make the film even better.

Pero bueno, hablemos de la acción, amigos.. las escenas de pelea son otro nivel, la cámara se mueve de manera muy precisa, te mete de lleno en cada golpe, cada patada, ¡sientes que estás ahí en medio del problema! ¿Vieron alguna vez una pelea a puños en un ascensor o en un pasillo tan apretado que parece que la cámara también está agarrándose a golpes? Monkey Man lo logra, pero de una manera brutal.. unos planos intensos, vibrantes, que te dejan el corazón latiendo a mil por hora, me recordó un poco a la acción de Daredevil.

Pero aquí la violencia no es porque sí.. es cruda, sí, pero a la vez tiene una coreografía que es una belleza, aunque suene raro, cada pelea te recuerda, así en la cara, lo que está en juego y la furia que trae Kid para vengarse.. les juro que más de una vez me encontré perplejo, pero lo que hace que Monkey Man sea mucho más que una simple película de acción es que tiene corazón, tiene sentimiento, obvio, no todo fue color de rosa para Dev Patel, que aparte de dirigir, protagoniza la película, se enfrentó a un montón de problemas durante la filmación. Por ahí leí que se quebró la mano, que trabajaron con un presupuesto que era nada y que hasta tuvieron problemas técnicos con las cámaras, pero, ¿saben qué? en vez de arruinarla, esos problemas le dan a la película una onda auténtica, única.. se siente el sudor, la pasión en cada escena, como si las dificultades mismas fueran parte de la historia.. es una muestra de la creatividad y la perseverancia de Patel, que agarró cada piedra en el camino y la usó para hacer la película aún mejor.

Another thing I loved was how they brought in the cultural and religious stuff, but in a super original way, because you see, Hollywood has tried a thousand times to mix action with mythology, but rarely does it come out as natural as here, with all the heritage of Indian mythology... it's not that they use Hanuman as an ornament, no! He's the soul of the movie, literally! Seeing how Kid transforms into a symbol of hope and that he's going to give the bad guys what they deserve, that really grabs you, visually and emotionally. For me, since I was a kid I love stories of heroes who grow up in the face of adversity, this mix of martial arts and tradition gave me a nostalgic vibe, but at the same time it inspired me a lot. And I can't forget to mention the emotional moments... because the film is not just action for action's sake, behind the mask there is a story of loss and a fight to the death for justice, there are moments when you laugh at how ironic it all is, others where the rawness of the story touches your heart, and sometimes you even shed a tear without realizing it.

The way the film makes its hero so human, showing that he is also vulnerable even though he is strong, is something that is not seen much in this type of films... I think that wave of duality is what left me thinking about Monkey Man for hours... obviously, like every film, it has its little things, I felt that sometimes the pace dropped a bit, as if some parts were lengthened, perhaps to get into more serious issues, and that sometimes cut the action a bit. There were times when I thought, "Come on, Kid, more action!", but those slower moments are easily forgiven because the character is so well done and the script is daring, and thinking about all the problems they had to film, it's incredible what they managed to achieve despite everything!

Otra cosa que me encantó fue cómo metieron la cosa cultural y religiosa, pero de una forma súper original, porque a ver, Hollywood ha intentado mil veces mezclar acción con mitología, pero pocas veces le sale tan natural como aquí, con toda la herencia de la mitología india.. no es que usen a Hanuman como un adorno, ¡no! ¡Es el alma de la película, literal! Ver cómo Kid se transforma en un símbolo de esperanza y que va a darles su merecido a los malos, eso te atrapa con todo, visual y emocionalmente, a mí, que desde chico me encantan las historias de héroes que se crecen ante la adversidad, esta mezcla de artes marciales y tradición me dio una onda nostálgica, pero a la vez me inspiró un montón. Y no puedo dejar de mencionar los momentos emotivos.. porque película no es solo acción por acción, detrás de la máscara hay una historia de pérdida y de una lucha a muerte por la justicia, hay momentos que te ríes de lo irónico que es todo, otros donde la crudeza de la historia te llega al corazón, y a veces hasta se te escapa una lagrimita sin que te des cuenta.

La forma en que la película hace a su héroe tan humano, mostrando que también es vulnerable aunque sea fuerte, es algo que no se ve mucho en este tipo de pelis.. creo que esa onda de dualidad es lo que me dejó pensando en Monkey Man por horas.. obvio, como toda película, tiene sus cositas, yo sentí que a veces el ritmo bajaba un poco, como que se alargaban algunas partes, quizás para meterse más en temas serios, y eso a veces cortaba un poco la acción. Hubo momentos que pensaba, "¡Dale, Kid, más acción!", pero esos ratitos más lentos se perdonan fácil porque el personaje está muy bien hecho y el guion es atrevido, además, pensando en todos los problemas que tuvieron para grabar, ¡es increíble lo que lograron a pesar de todo!

At the end of the day, Monkey Man is much more than just an action movie, as I said... it's a complete experience that blows your mind because it mixes things you don't expect: cultural depth and a political critique that goes straight to the point, I ended up impressed with Dev Patel's vision! Whether you're a fan of fights to the death or stories that touch your heart, this movie has something for you, it is, without a doubt, a gem!

And what rating do I give it? If I had to rate it, I would give it a 9/10. It’s not perfect, sometimes it slows down the pace a bit and gets too thoughtful, which sometimes cuts the action a bit—but the passion, creativity and raw energy that comes out of every scene are undeniable… it’s not the typical empty and stupid action movie, it has soul, heart and a way of seeing things that makes it different from everything Hollywood has accustomed us to… if you’re looking for an experience that fills you with adrenaline and also leaves you thinking, you won’t be disappointed at all! Así seas fanático de las peleas a morir o de las historias que te tocan el corazón, esta película tiene algo para ti, es, sin duda, ¡una joya!

¿Y qué calificación le pongo? Si tuviera que calificarla, le daría un 9/10. No es perfecta, a veces baja un poco el ritmo y se pone a reflexionar demasiado, lo que a veces corta un poco la acción—pero la pasión, la creatividad y esa energía bruta que sale de cada escena son innegables.. no es la típica peli de acción vacía y estúpida, tiene alma, corazón y una forma de ver las cosas que la hace diferente a todo lo que Hollywood nos tiene acostumbrados.. si buscas una experiencia que te llene de adrenalina y que además te deje pensando, ¡no te va a decepcionar para nada!
