Mini-Sculptures: Small but Weighty Reasons to Visit Uzhhorod #13 Rubik's cube (Ua/En)

А сьогодні в моїй рубриці #uzhhorodsculptures "Маленькі, але вагомі причини приїхати в Ужгород" я розповім про міні-скульптуру кубика Рубика, котра не зовсім міні. Традиційно, скульптором став Михайло Колодко і технічно можна вважати, що це і не міні-скульптура, бо виконана вона в натуральну величину.

And today in my column #uzhhorodsculptures "Small but Weighty Reasons to Visit Uzhhorod" I will tell about a mini-sculpture of a Rubik's cube, which is not quite mini. Traditionally, Mykhailo Kolodko became a sculptor and technically it can be considered that this is not a mini-sculpture, because it is made in life-size.

But first, I strongly advise you to read the world's smallest Statue of Liberty, because these two sculptures are practically neighbours.

Що таке кубик Рубика? / What is a Rubik's Cube?

Про кубик Рубіка знають всі, адже згідно із офіційною інформацією, вже в 1980 році практично кожен п’ятий житель планети Земля "воював" із цією головоломкою збираючи до купи правильні кольори.

Everyone knows about the Rubik's Cube, because according to official information, in 1980, almost every fifth inhabitant of the planet Earth "fought" with this puzzle, collecting the right colours.

З'явився кубик в 1974 році, а автором став угорський скульптор та винахідник Ерньо Рубік. Спочатку він назвав свій винахід, як "Магічний куб", але в 1980 році компанія Ideal Toys перейменували головоломку за іменем винахідника і цього ж року виграла німецьку нагороду "Гра року".

The cube appeared in 1974, and the author was the Hungarian sculptor and inventor Erno Rubik. He initially called his invention the "Magic Cube", but in 1980 Ideal Toys renamed the puzzle after the inventor and won the German Game of the Year award the same year.

Незабаром з'явились схожі головоломки, як від самого Рубіка, так і з інших джерел, включаючи кубик 4х4х4 — "Помста Рубіка". Є також варіанти розмірів 2х2х2 та 5х5х5 ("Кишеньковий кубик" та "Професорський кубик", відповідно) та головоломки інших форм, таких як піраміда і тетраедр.

Soon similar puzzles appeared, both from Rubik himself and from other sources, including the 4x4x4 cube - "Rubik's Revenge". There are also 2x2x2 and 5x5x5 sizes ("Pocket Cube" and "Professor's Cube", respectively) and puzzles of other shapes, such as a pyramid and a tetrahedron.

Взагалі, чим далі, тим більше різних версій кубика з'являється. На сьогоднішній день існує кубик 7х7х7, котрий світовий чемпіон із розв'язування цієї головоломки Френк Моріс зміг розгадати за 6 хвилин та 29,31 секунди!

In general, the further away, the more different versions of the cube appear. Today there is a 7x7x7 cube, which the world champion in solving this puzzle Frank Morris was able to solve in 6 minutes and 29.31 seconds!

До речі, розповім і з приводу змагань на швидкісне складання кубика Рубіка. Вірніше про те, що ці змаганання проходять у декількох номінаціях: збирання двома руками або однією, з закритими очима, а також під водою на одному вдиху.

By the way, I will tell about competitions on the high-speed assembly of a Rubik's cube. Rather, these competitions are held in several categories: gathering with two hands or one, with eyes closed, as well as underwater in one breath.

А що вже говорити про онлайн версії кубика. Так, наприклад, 2006 році Ройс Нельсон та Чарлі Невіл створили 5-ти вимірну модель 5х5х5х5х5, а на січень 2007 її розв'язало лише 7 осіб.

And what to say about the online version of the cube. For example, in 2006, Royce Nelson and Charlie Neville created a 5x5x5x5x5 5-dimensional model, and in January 2007 it was solved by only 7 people.

Яка історія в скульптури? / What is the history of sculpture?

Скульптуру кубика Рубіка встановили в Ужгороді 22 грудня 2014 року в честь 40-річчя винайдення головоломки. На виготовлення бронзової версії скульптору знадобилось близько одного кілограму матеріалу, а розмір відповідає оригінальному кубику.

The sculpture of the Rubik's cube was installed in Uzhgorod on December 22, 2014, in honour of the 40th anniversary of the invention of the puzzle. It took about one kilogram of material to make the bronze version of the sculptor, and the size corresponds to the original cube.

На відкритті цієї міні-скульптури були присутні Генеральний консул Угорщини в Ужгороді Йожеф Бачкаї, сам Михайло Колодко, а також завідувач кафедри туризму УжНУ Федір Шандор.
Місце було обране не просто так, неподалік знаходиться Угорське посольство і тому це був певний символізм в плані, віддати шану найпопулярнішній забаві угорського походження.

The opening of this mini-sculpture was attended by the Consul General of Hungary in Uzhgorod Jozef Bachkai, Mykhailo Kolodko himself, as well as the head of the Department of Tourism of Uzhhorod National University Fedir Sándor.
The place was chosen not just like that, the Hungarian embassy is nearby and therefore it was a certain symbolism in the plan to pay homage to the most popular entertainment of Hungarian origin.

The sculpture is located in the city of Uzhhorod on the Pravoslavna Embankment. Installed on the railings of the steps right next to the pedestrian bridge.
