Pumice Field / Campo de Piedra Pómez

In Argentina, there's a place that feels like it's from another planet. Walking through it makes you feel far from everything you've ever known. It's the Pumice Field, a desert space with no native animals or trees. The sight of this place produces a feeling of strangeness.
Pumice is a rock of volcanic origin, formed by lava thrown into the air. Pumice showers are common during volcanic eruptions. They say this area was formed millions of years ago by volcanic events. I can't imagine the violence and magnitude of those eruptions! If anything was alive back then, it was buried under those gigantic eruptions.
Searching online, I discovered that pumice is used as an abrasive and in exfoliating cosmetics. What surprised me most was learning that it's used in the production of worn-out jeans. It's also used ground and added to some toothpastes. In addition to its use in cosmetics, it's also used in the construction industry. I was surprised to learn about all these uses.
The Pumice Field is located in the north of the province of Catamarca, more precisely in the department of Antofagasta de la Sierra, in the area known as the Catamarca Puna. This otherworldly place is located just 35 km from the town of El Peñón, making it the closest strategic point for visiting the tourist site.
The route to get there is by 4x4 vehicle with a guide or by booking excursions. The road passes through spectacular landscapes.

En Argentina, hay un lugar que parece de otro planeta. Caminar por allí es sentirse lejos de todo lo conocido. Se trata del Campo de Piedra Pómez, un espacio desértico sin animales autóctonos ni árboles. La visión de este lugar produce una sensación de extrañeza.
La piedra pómez es una piedra de origen volcánico, formada por la lava proyectada al aire. Las lluvias de piedra pómez son comunes durante las erupciones volcánicas. Dicen que esta zona se formó hace millones de años debido a eventos volcánicos. ¡No puedo imaginar la violencia y magnitud de esas erupciones! Si había algo vivo en ese entonces, quedó sepultado bajo esas gigantescas erupciones.
Buscando información en internet, descubrí que la piedra pómez se usa como abrasivo, en cosméticos exfoliantes, y lo que más me sorprendió fue enterarme de que se emplea en la producción de jeans gastados. También se usa molida y se añade a algunos dentífricos. Además de su uso en cosméticos, también se emplea en la industria de la construcción. Me resultó sorprendente conocer todos estos usos.
El Campo de Piedra Pómez se encuentra al norte de la provincia de Catamarca, más precisamente en el departamento de Antofagasta de la Sierra, en la zona conocida como la Puna Catamarqueña. Este lugar de otro mundo está localizado a solo unos 35 km de la localidad de El Peñón, por lo tanto, esta localidad funciona como el punto estratégico más cercano para realizar visitas al lugar turístico en cuestión.
El recorrido para llegar se realiza en vehículos 4x4 con guía o contratando excursiones. El camino atraviesa paisajes espectaculares.

My visit to this place amazed me. It's a labyrinth of pumice formations that invites you to get lost inside. However, by order of the guide, we can't go too far inside. It's a huge place, and without the guide's supervision, it's very easy to get disoriented and lost.

Mi visita a ese lugar me asombró. Es un laberinto de formaciones de piedra pómez que invita a perderse dentro de él. Sin embargo, por orden del guía, no podemos adentrarnos demasiado. Se trata de un lugar inmenso y, sin la supervisión del guía, es muy fácil desorientarse y perderse.

Without a human presence, it's difficult to gauge size, and in a completely uninhabited area, this comparison becomes impossible. Sometimes, we can gauge size when we see the tall, snow-capped mountains on the horizon.

Sin un elemento humano, es difícil tomar referencia de los tamaños, y tratándose de un lugar completamente deshabitado, esta comparación se hace imposible. En ocasiones, podemos tomar referencia del tamaño cuando observamos las altas montañas nevadas en el horizonte.

Suddenly, in the midst of such solitude, other tourists arrived, and thanks to them and their vehicles, I was able to take photographs that provide a reference to the human dimension. Surprisingly, one of these tourists was a photographer, and unlike me, he brought his tripod. I never spoke to him; I don't know who he was, but I was grateful that he had positioned himself there with his tripod. It gave me a good reference.

De pronto, ante tanta soledad, llegaron otros turistas, y gracias a ellos y sus vehículos pude tomar fotografías que proporcionan una referencia del tamaño con el elemento humano. Lo sorprendente fue que uno de estos turistas era fotógrafo y, a diferencia de mí, trajo su trípode. Nunca hablé con él, no sé quién era, pero agradecí que se hubiera ubicado en ese lugar con su trípode. Me dio una buena referencia.

After taking photos for a while, I lost my bearings and discovered I'd been capturing the same place several times. However, by using different lenses, we can appreciate the grandeur of these formations. The same place looks different each time: sometimes it seems like a small landscape, and other times, a vast one.

Después de un rato tomando fotos, perdí la orientación y descubrí que había estado capturando el mismo lugar varias veces. Sin embargo, al usar distintos lentes, podemos apreciar la grandiosidad de esas formaciones. El mismo lugar parece diferente cada vez: a veces parece un paisaje pequeño y otras veces, uno inmenso.

Sometimes, I thought I could guess shapes in those gigantic stones. For example, in these, my mind makes me see the head of a turtle. It's fascinating how our brains try to find familiar patterns and shapes even in landscapes as alien as this one. Each rock formation has a story to tell and a shape to discover.

A veces, me parecía adivinar formas en esas gigantescas piedras. Por ejemplo, en estas, mi mente me hace ver la cabeza de una tortuga. Es fascinante cómo nuestro cerebro intenta encontrar patrones y formas familiares incluso en paisajes tan alienígenas como este. Cada formación rocosa tiene una historia que contar y una forma que descubrir.

In this photo, we once again see the photographer with his tripod. It looks immensely small compared to the gigantic pumice formations, further highlighting the magnitude of this incredible landscape.

The Pumice Field is a protected natural area covering 75,000 hectares. The altitude of this region ranges from 3,050 meters above sea level to 4,850 meters above sea level. The high altitude makes the air difficult, and breathing is quite noticeable. The low oxygen content can cause dizziness and headaches.

El Campo de Piedra Pómez es un área natural protegida que abarca una superficie de 75 mil hectáreas. La altura de esta región varía desde los 3050 metros sobre el nivel del mar hasta los 4850 msnm. La gran altitud quita el aire, y la dificultad para respirar es bastante manifiesta. La baja cantidad de oxígeno puede llegar a provocar mareos y dolores de cabeza.

From a higher elevation, I can appreciate the immensity of the landscape. With strange and intricate pink, ochre, and yellow rock formations that rise to over 4 meters in height, the field stretches approximately 23 km from north to south. These formations create a fascinating and surreal landscape that seems taken from another world, from another planet.

Ubicándome en una altura más elevada, logro apreciar la inmensidad del paisaje. Con extrañas e intrincadas formaciones de roca rosada, ocre y amarilla que superan los 4 metros de altura, la extensión del campo es de aproximadamente 23 km de norte a sur. Estas formaciones crean un paisaje fascinante y surrealista que parece sacado de otro mundo, de otro planeta.

From above, I could see other vehicles approaching with more tourists. The speed of the trucks kicked up dust, creating an evocative image that showed the vehicles' route. The sky was clear, with only a few clouds decorating the beautiful landscape. The combination of dust and backlighting created a spectacular view, adding a dramatic touch to the already impressive setting of the Pumice Field.

Desde la altura pude divisar que se acercaban otros vehículos con más turistas. La velocidad de las camionetas levantaba polvo, generando una sugerente imagen que mostraba el recorrido de los vehículos. El cielo estaba diáfano y solo había unas pocas nubes que decoraban el paisaje tan bonito. La combinación del polvo a contraluz creaba una vista espectacular, añadiendo un toque dramático al ya impresionante escenario del Campo de Piedra Pómez.

Once again, the human element, thanks to these two tourists walking through the pumice field. Their figures look immensely small compared to the large stone formations. I don't know who they were, I don't know their names, I don't know if they enjoyed the walk, but I'm sure they did. They can't even imagine that I found them with my telephoto lens, photographed them, and right now we're seeing them here. The image is so surreal it looks like a Dali painting. The combination of the vastness of the landscape with the smallness of the people creates a dreamlike scene that captures the essence of this unique and strange place. A place from another planet.

Otra vez el elemento humano, gracias a estas dos turistas que caminaban por el campo de piedra pómez. Sus figuras se ven inmensamente pequeñas en comparación con las grandes formaciones de piedra. No sé quiénes serían, desconozco sus nombres, no sé si habrán disfrutado del paseo, pero seguro que sí. Ellas ni se deben imaginar que las encontré con mi teleobjetivo, las fotografié y justo ahora las estamos viendo aquí. La imagen es tan surrealista que parece un cuadro de Dalí. La mezcla de la vastedad del paisaje con la pequeñez de las personas crea una escena onírica que captura la esencia de este lugar único y extraño. Un lugar de otro planeta.
