The white streets of Burguillo del Cerro, typical of this area of Spain, led me towards the centre of the town, winding like a kind of small labyrinth, which led me to a small hill that dominated the entire view of the town. When I asked people about the views of the place and also about the castle that dominates from the hill, I spent a long time listening to the stories that they told me about it. The castle, according to the story, had originally been a fortress built to defend the Burgos, or small plots of land, by the inhabitants of the place, although there is also talk of its Muslim origin. Later, it was the “Order of the Temple”, the monks and knights Templar, who took control of the castle, as happens in a large part of this region of Extremadura.

Las blancas calles de Burguillo del Cerro típicas en esta zona de España me iban llevando hacia el centro de la villa, serpenteado como en una especie de pequeño laberinto, que me conducía hacia un pequeño alto en el que se dominaba toda la vista de la villa. Al preguntar sobre las vistas a personas del lugar y también sobre el castillo que domina desde la colina estuve un buen rato escuchando las historias que sobre esto me relataban. El castillo, según se cuenta, había sido en principio fortaleza construida para defender los Burgos, o pequeños terrenos, por habitantes del lugar aunque también se habla de su origen musulmán. Tiempo más tarde es la “Orden del Temple”, los monjes y caballeros templarios lo que se hacen con el dominio del castillo como sucede en gran parte de esta región de Extremadura.

The town was decorated for the local festivals, which bring together the historical traditions that make it so special. There are two clear divisions in terms of the views from this viewpoint: the upper part and the entire town centre at its foot. The church of Santa María de la Encina and San Juan Bautista is the most notable religious building, a baroque style and a large bell tower that sets it apart from many churches in these areas. At one time, both parishes were merged and the structure of the church presides over the entire life of the town's population from a small height.

El pueblo lucia engalanado debido a las fiestas locales donde se recogen esas tradiciones históricas que lo hacen tan especial. Dos divisiones claras en cuanto a tener las vistas desde ese mirador, la parte alta y todo el casco urbano a los pies del mismo. La iglesia de Santa María de la Encina y san Juan Bautista es la edificicación religiosa que más destaca, un estilo barroco y una gran torre campanario que la diferencia de muchas iglesias de estas zonas. En su momento ambas parroquias se fusionaron y la estructura de la iglesia preside desde un pequeño alto toda la vida de la población de la ciudad.

After touring the highest part of the town, I headed to the main square, which was decorated with medieval and Templar motifs. When I visit these small towns, I like to take a look at their monuments, castles, fortresses, or significant and main buildings. The town halls are also, although in many cases ordinary buildings, places where historically and politically important events have taken place and they stand out from the rest for the events that took place there. The main squares that are usually at their feet are the meeting places and meeting points for the inhabitants of the town.

Después de recorrer esa parte más alta de la villa me encamine a su plaza mayor que lucía engalanada con motivos medievales y templarios. Cuando visito estos pequeños pueblos me gusta registrar estas localidades con sus monumentos, castillos, fortalezas o edificios significativos y principales. Los ayuntamientos son también, aunque en muchos casos edificios comunes, lugares donde histórica y políticamente han sucedido importantes acontecimientos y destacan sobre los demás por los sucesos en ellos acontecidos. Las plazas principales que suelen estar a sus pies son los lugares de reunión y punto de encuentro de los habitantes de la villa.
