The city of Havana is home to one of the most beautiful museums in the country, where an important part of the memory, culture and history of Cuba and its capital is treasured. It is located in the former Palace of the Captains General, now the City Museum. Here are preserved a great number of important objects that are necessary to understand the history and development of Havana and the country.
This museum is located on Tacon Street, between Obispo and O'Reilly, in the Square of Arms of Old Havana. The Palacio de los Capitanes Generales is a building that is several centuries old and the antiquity and elegance of other eras can be perceived as you walk through its corridors and halls.
Just as you enter, you will find a room with a beautiful exhibition decorated with period furnishings including Louis XV and Louis XVI style furniture, picturesque oil portraits and delicate porcelain ornaments. This room allows you to appreciate the luxury and opulence that characterised the standard of living of those who lived in the Palace of the Captains General.
The next room I visited was the Coach Houses. Here there is an exhibition of different models of 19th century carriages and several showcases containing accessories such as keys, padlocks, locks and carriage lanterns, as well as a collection of objects related to the daily life of that period.
These carriages were horse-drawn carriages used for transportation. Some of them were used for carriage rides for the nobility, while others were used for transporting goods or for selling goods. For example, in this room there is a very elegant and well-preserved carriage, which belonged to one of the kings of Spain, who sent it to Cuba on a visit to the island.
There is also a model of the first locomotive that circulated in Cuba.
Another room to visit was the Sala Parroquial Mayor de La Habana. In this room you can see some archaeological remains of the first church built in the city, which was located on the same site now occupied by this museum. Jewellery and valuable objects are exhibited here, as well as sculptures and works of art. There is also a beautiful painting by the first recognised Cuban painter.
On the day of my visit not all the rooms were open, but it was still a very interesting and instructive tour. Besides, the place itself is very beautiful, with a large interior garden and impressive architecture, full of history and culture. I hope to be able to return another time to see the rest of the exhibitions.
So much for this little tour of this great museum.
